My WHV 462 has officially expired after one year 🥲 and here are just 5 things you CANNOT do while on your work holiday in Australia.
1. It’s a year without work. Think of it as a sabbatical if you’ve spent a few years in the work force, just like me. Take the plane so often, go out and explore!
2. You WILL miss important birthdays and gatherings. But you will also see that those who truly matter, will always have a part of themselves reaching out to you or be right at home, waiting for you.
3. ❗️don’t worry so much about having to work everyday. I worked enough to pay the bills and to keep me sane (human interaction), and that was enough.
4. Of course, living overseas and not working full time means quite a cut in disposable income. But along the budget sheets is the freedom to explore outwardly and inwardly.
5. Just go out and soak in some nature. You can ’t get that in SG

One important realization is that it’s okay to not work every single day; instead, find a balanced approach that sustains your finances and mental well-being without burning out. I personally worked just enough to cover essentials, which gave me more freedom to travel across Australia and even to nearby countries.
Homesickness is real and tough, but acknowledging it helped me stay connected with loved ones back home through regular calls while fully immersing myself in new cultures and friendships abroad. It’s all about quality over quantity—both in work and relationships. The natural beauty of Australia—its beaches, national parks, and unique wildlife—offered a refreshing contrast to my life in Singapore, reminding me just how important it is to get outdoors and explore.
Budgeting wisely was also a key lesson. A drop in disposable income is expected, but the wealth you gain in experiences and personal growth more than compensates. Take advantage of local activities, free events, and nature hikes to keep costs down while enriching your journey.
Lastly, don’t stay stuck in one place. Use the flexibility of the WHV to travel beyond Australia’s borders, visiting neighboring countries or off-the-beaten-path destinations. This expanded perspective was invaluable to me and transformed my year into a true sabbatical of discovery and fulfillment.
