Being an autism mom is a journey filled with unique moments, profound love, and constant learning. Every day brings its own set of adventures, and honestly, I wouldn't trade it for anything. For all the autism mothers and autistic parents out there, I want to share a little more about what truly makes our days special and how we can foster a home filled with kindness and understanding. One of the biggest lessons I've learned is the power of being kind and patient. Our autistic kiddos often experience the world differently, and what might seem like a simple task to us can be a monumental challenge for them. It’s in those moments, when sensory overload hits or communication becomes a hurdle, that our patience is truly tested. But remembering to approach every situation with kindness, to take a deep breath and offer a gentle word or a reassuring hug, makes all the difference. It’s about meeting them where they are, not forcing them into a mold that doesn't fit their unique brain. Take our morning routine, for example. It used to be a mad dash, but I quickly realized that rushing only led to meltdowns. Now, we build in extra time, use visual schedules, and celebrate every small step – from getting dressed to eating breakfast. It's a reminder to myself to always be kind, not just to my child, but to myself as well. This 'autism kindness' extends to how we view their 'quirks'; they aren't deficits, but rather unique traits that make them who they are. My child's specific interests, for instance, might seem intense to some, but to me, they're windows into their brilliant mind. The unconditional love we have for our autistic children is the fuel that keeps us going. It's a love that sees beyond diagnoses and celebrates every tiny victory. It’s the joy in seeing them master a new skill, or the pure delight in their face when they discover something new. This love teaches us to advocate fiercely for them, to find resources, and to build a supportive community for ourselves and our families. For all the autism parents navigating similar paths, remember you're not alone in this. If there's one thing I'd encourage, it's to embrace flexibility and find joy in the unexpected. Some days are harder than others, but focusing on the positive, on the moments of connection and growth, helps immensely. We need more of this – more understanding, more acceptance, and more open conversations about the incredible experiences of raising an autistic child. Let's keep sharing our stories, offering empathy, and building a world where every unique brain is celebrated.
needs to be more awareness and understanding surrounding autistic kids because some just don't get it ❤️
