🍇 Vineyard Harvest 🍇

2024/7/13 Edited to

... Read moreAfter my incredible vineyard harvest experience, I couldn't stop thinking about everything I saw and learned. While I was focused on picking those juicy grapes, I also started noticing how meticulously the vines were arranged. It really got me wondering: how do they get the grapevines to grow like that? That's when I realized I was observing different 'grape training methods' in action, even if I didn't know the proper terms at the time! It turns out, how a grapevine is trained is super important for so many reasons. It's not just about making the vineyard look neat; it seriously impacts the quality of the grapes, how much fruit each vine produces, and even how easy (or hard!) it is to harvest. For example, some methods help ensure the grapes get just the right amount of sunlight, which is crucial for flavor development. Others help with airflow, preventing diseases, and keeping the fruit off the ground. During my Vineyard Harvest, I saw some vines that were pretty low to the ground, almost like small bushes. This made picking a bit of a bend-and-reach exercise, but the grapes felt very sheltered. This is often called a 'Gobelet' or 'Bush' training system, common in warmer, drier climates because it shades the grapes from intense sun. Then there were other rows where the vines were trained along wires, creating neat rows of foliage and fruit. This is a classic 'Trellis' system, often a Vertical Shoot Positioning (VSP) trellis, which encourages the leaves to grow upwards, exposing the grape clusters to more sun and air. It definitely made harvesting a bit more straightforward, as the grapes were at a more comfortable height. I also learned about 'Cordon' training, where the main trunk extends horizontally along a wire, and fruiting spurs grow from it. And 'Guyot' (single or double) which involves renewing the fruiting wood each year. It’s fascinating how each method is chosen specifically for the grape varietal, the climate, and the soil. Imagine the thought that goes into planning a whole vineyard! Understanding these grape training methods truly added another layer to my appreciation for the wine-making process. It’s not just about picking grapes; it’s about understanding the entire life cycle of the vine, from how it’s meticulously shaped to how that shaping contributes to the final delicious wine in your glass. Next time you're at a vineyard, whether for a tasting or a harvest, take a moment to look at how the vines are trained. It's a small detail that tells a big story about viticulture and the hard work behind every bottle. It made my Vineyard Harvest experience even more enriching!
