How I Recovered from Highway PTSD 😱🤬

I never imagined I’d fear something as routine as driving on the highway. But after four accidents, each one chipping away at my confidence, the highway became a trigger. My heart would race, my palms would sweat, and I’d do everything I could to avoid it.

But here’s the truth: healing is possible—and I want to share the steps that helped me take my power back.

1. I Acknowledged My Fear (Without Shame)

I stopped downplaying my anxiety. It wasn’t “just in my head.” I experienced trauma, and my body remembered it. Naming it—PTSD—was the first step in reclaiming control.

2. I Started Therapy

I found a therapist who specialized in trauma and anxiety. Through sessions and techniques like CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and exposure therapy, I slowly began to reframe my thoughts and reactions around driving.

3. I Used Visualization & Breathing Techniques

Before even getting back on the highway, I practiced mentally driving the route while using box breathing (inhale 4, hold 4, exhale 4, hold 4). It trained my body to stay calm even when my mind flashed back to those scary moments.

4. I Gradually Re-Exposed Myself

I didn’t jump right back onto a busy freeway. I started small:

• Driving short distances on quiet roads

• Merging onto the highway during low-traffic hours

• Eventually driving with someone I trust beside me

Each step felt like a win. And I celebrated those wins.

5. I Created a “Calm Driving Ritual”

This helped ground me every time:

• My favorite playlist or calming music

• Essential oils (peppermint + lavender)

• A mantra: “I am safe. I am in control. I am stronger than my fear.”

6. I Stopped Comparing My Journey

Some people feel fine driving right after an accident. That wasn’t me—and that’s okay. Healing isn’t linear, and every mile I drove was a step toward freedom, not perfection.

7. I Remembered My “Why”

Being able to take the highway gave me back my independence. It meant spontaneous trips, visiting loved ones, and saying yes to things without fear. That became my motivation.

💬 If you’re going through this too…

You are not alone. Your fear is valid. But so is your strength. And if I could get back on the road after four accidents, you can too—on your time, in your way.

... Read moreRecovering from PTSD, especially after traumatic experiences like highway accidents, requires a multifaceted approach. Beyond the essential steps I took in therapy and personal reflection, community support plays a critical role in the healing process. Engaging with others who share similar experiences can be incredibly grounding, providing a sense of belonging and understanding. Many individuals find value in support groups, where stories are shared, and coping mechanisms are discussed openly. This shared vulnerability not only paves the way for accountability but also fosters hope as members witness others overcoming their fears. In addition to therapeutic practices, lifestyle changes can significantly aid in recovery. Regular physical activity has proven effects on mental well-being, lowering anxiety, and enhancing mood. Establishing a consistent routine that includes outdoor activities may also help reduce stress related to driving. Mindfulness practices such as yoga and meditation can further complement traditional therapy, as these activities promote relaxation and enhance the body’s resilience to stress. It’s essential to celebrate every small victory along the way, whether it’s driving a short distance or simply sitting in the car without anxiety. Recognizing and celebrating these milestones reinforces progress and motivates continued growth. Remember, healing varies for everyone, and it’s essential to honor your unique journey.

HOW TO AVOID OVEREATING 🍽
entering my first year of college, i struggled SO MUCH with overeating. part of it was the change in environment & different/western food (i'm used to eating chinese food at home with my parents), but it was also the stress and excitement of being totally independent for the first time.

A person's back shows long, light-colored damaged hair, with an inset close-up revealing severe thinning and breakage on the scalp. The image highlights the impact of 6 years of bleaching, hair extension damage, and diabetic hair thinning and loss.
This image explains how avoiding heat helps hair recovery. High temperatures alter hair's protein structure, convert α-keratin to β-keratin, weaken hair, open cuticles, and strip natural moisture and oils, leading to dryness and damage.
The image illustrates the benefits of using a shower filter for hair health. It removes contaminants like chlorine, lead, and heavy metals that can damage hair, making it rough and dry, and supports a healthy scalp for growth and shine.
How I saved my damaged hair
I absolutely destroyed my hair. I used to bleach my hair every 8 weeks for about 6 years and being a type 1 diabetic (I was newly diagnosed and had uncontrolled blood sugar in the beginning) led to my hair having constant breakage, thinning, never growing, and feeling like straw. I thought the cau
