Can someone explain to me what all that white stuff is?
From my personal experience as an avid gardener, encountering white substances on plants or soil can be confusing, especially when you're just starting out. Often, that white stuff could be powdery mildew, a common fungal disease that appears as a white, powdery coating on leaves and stems. It thrives in humid conditions and can spread quickly if not addressed early. Another possibility is the presence of mineral deposits or salts, especially if you use hard water for irrigation or certain fertilizers, which can leave a white crust on soil surfaces and plant pots. It's essential to ensure proper watering and soil drainage to prevent this buildup. If you notice white residue on the soil surface, it might also be perlite, a white volcanic glass often added to potting mixes to improve aeration and drainage. To manage powdery mildew, I recommend removing infected leaves promptly, increasing air circulation around your plants, and applying organic fungicides such as neem oil or a baking soda spray. For mineral deposits, flushing the soil with distilled water helps wash away excess salts.
