DIY Reading Nook

✨ Room inspo: My wife and I bought our first home in 2023. I had very little experience with woodworking/house work at the time, but we really wanted to start enhancing our home on a budget!

One of Madison’s very first requests was to have a reading nook built in this small space next to our stairs. I completed a few smaller projects to get comfortable with my woodworking skills first. After about 9 months I decided to take on this project and I’m so proud of how this turned out.

I learned a lot of new skills with this project, primarily how to sew. I try to make sure each new project includes a feature that will challenge me, and sewing the cushions was a HUGE challenge that I really did enjoy. This is your sign to get out there and challenge yourself with something new!

After building my own built-in reading nook, I've learned so much about transforming even the smallest, most overlooked corners into functional and inviting sanctuaries. If you're dreaming of your own reading haven, let's explore some inspiring "reading wall ideas" and clever uses of space. Beyond a traditional built-in bench like mine, consider creating a striking reading wall using floating shelves to display your favorite books and small decor. You could even add a beautiful mural or a gallery wall of art to make the space truly unique. Incorporating textured elements like vertical shiplap, as I did for my nook, can add a charming, cottage-core feel and create a beautiful backdrop for your reading adventures. For those with less conventional spaces, a "reading nook top of stairs" can be an incredible way to utilize an often-wasted area. When planning such a nook, think about natural light – is there a window nearby? If not, strategic lighting, like sleek wall sconces or a floor lamp, becomes crucial. Comfort is key, so consider a compact armchair, a plush floor cushion, or a small custom-built bench. Always prioritize safety, especially with railings, and try to minimize noise distractions to maintain that peaceful reading atmosphere. Another fantastic option for maximizing space is transforming a "closet nook." Imagine taking an unused closet, removing the doors, and turning it into a charming, intimate reading retreat! First, clear everything out and give it a fresh coat of paint – a calming blue-gray, perhaps, to set a serene mood. Then, think vertically: install shelves along the sides for your books and decorative items. For seating, a cozy floor cushion or a custom-fit bench with comfortable pillows and cushions will work wonders. Since closets can be dark, add battery-operated LED strip lights or a small, plug-in lamp to ensure you have ample light for reading. Personalize it with a soft throw blanket, some small plants, or a framed print to make it truly your own. Regardless of where you decide to build your "just for reading" space, remember these essentials. Comfort is paramount: invest in supportive cushions and throw pillows, and keep a soft blanket nearby for chilly evenings. Lighting makes all the difference; combine natural light with good task lighting like a reading lamp or those stylish wall sconces. Don't forget storage! Built-in cubbies or a small side table are perfect for keeping books, a cup of tea, or your journal handy. Finally, infuse your personality into the decor. Whether it's a collection of vintage finds, a string of fairy lights, or cherished photos, these personal touches will make your reading nook feel like a true sanctuary. It’s amazing what you can achieve with a bit of creativity and a willingness to learn new skills, even on a budget!
