I’ve been hinting around a new project for awhile now, and I think it’s time I let you in on the secret. On October 17, 2026, I’ll be releasing my seventh book, “Hey, Shelby Rae!” This book is a children’s chapter book that explores the concepts of adoption, chosen families and searching for your dreams. This book has been lightning in a bottle and I can’t wait for children, and the children at heart, to read it.
“Shelby Rae has one big dream—to find a family who will love her forever. With her loyal best friend, Bobo, by her side, she faces the challenges of life in the woods with courage, hope, and plenty of heart. When they stumble upon a house unlike any they’ve seen before, Shelby Rae gets the chance she’s always wanted. But will she be brave enough to trust again? Join Shelby Rae on a heartwarming adventure about friendship, second chances, and discovering where you truly belong.”
A portion of all proceeds will go to the Appalachian Animal Rescue Center.

... Read moreAs someone who has always enjoyed children's literature that offers meaningful life lessons, I find 'Hey, Shelby Rae!' truly inspiring. The book gently tackles important themes like adoption and chosen families, which are often underrepresented in children's chapter books. Shelby Rae’s journey to find a family who will love her forever is relatable for many kids navigating complex emotions about belonging and identity.
What makes this story stand out is the inclusion of her loyal dog, Bobo, a character that brings warmth and companionship to Shelby’s adventure. Sharing a bond with a pet can be incredibly comforting, especially during times of uncertainty, and this book captures that beautifully. Children and adults alike can appreciate the underlying message about courage — the bravery it takes to trust again after hardship.
Additionally, the book’s support of the Appalachian Animal Rescue Center connects readers with a cause that promotes animal welfare, encouraging empathy on multiple levels. This aspect adds another layer of goodness to the story, showing young readers the importance of kindness beyond human relationships.
I recommend this book to parents, teachers, and caregivers seeking stories that raise awareness on adoption and foster empathy. It’s a perfect read for children learning about different family structures and the power of hope and friendship. Plus, the charming illustrations by Alexey Chystikov help bring Shelby Rae’s world vividly to life, making the journey all the more engaging and accessible for early readers.
