Whether you're designing women characters or powerful male figures, getting the proportions and musculature right provides a solid foundation. Even if your style is cartoony or highly stylized, knowing the underlying structure helps you simplify and exaggerate effectively without making things look 'off'. I've been studying a lot of anatomical references, and it really pays off when you see your characters standing strong and dynamic. And let's not forget how clothes fit! This might seem like a small detail, but it dramatically impacts a character's believability and personality. Do they wear baggy clothes because they're shy? Or sleek, tailored outfits because they're confident and sharp? The way fabric drapes, wrinkles, and moves with the body tells a story about their environment, their job, and their overall vibe. It’s a fantastic way to add another layer of character development drawing to your work. Developing a character's personality is just as important as their visual design. It’s not enough for them to just look cool; they need to feel real. I often ask myself: What are their quirks? What motivates them? What are their fears? Even if you're not writing a full novel, having a clear idea of these traits will inform your design choices. For example, a cheerful character might have a more open posture and brighter colors, while a mysterious one might be shrouded in shadow with more intricate, subtle details. This character development meaning in real life for your creations is what makes them memorable, much like the beloved characters from shows like Gravity Falls or games like Nikke that many of us adore.
