Wow, it’s already been six months since I started my loc journey, and let me tell you, it's been a wild ride of discovery and patience! Like many of you, I've been wondering, 'What stage am I in right now?' It's natural to question your progress, especially when every day brings new changes to your locs. From what I've learned and observed from other loc sisters, the loc journey typically has several distinct stages. Understanding these can really help manage expectations and appreciate the unique beauty of each phase. Starter/Baby Locs Stage (0-6 months): This is where it all begins! Your hair is freshly twisted, coiled, or braided. They're often neat at first but can unravel easily, especially after washing. You might experience a lot of frizz, and your hair might not look like 'locs' yet – that’s perfectly normal! The goal here is for the hair to start matting and tangling internally. Budding Stage (6-12 months): This is often the most exciting and sometimes frustrating stage! You'll start to notice small knots, lumps, and bumps forming along the hair shaft. These are the internal tangles beginning to solidify, and your locs are really starting to 'bud.' They might look frizzy, feel a bit stiff, and probably won't lay flat. For me, at 6 months, I am definitely deep in this budding phase. My hair feels thicker in some areas, and while I still battle frizz, I can clearly see the structure forming within each loc. It's like my hair is finally deciding it wants to be a loc! Teen Stage (12-18 months): Your locs are longer and more defined, but they still have a mind of their own! They might stick out in different directions, hence the 'teen' analogy. They're not fully mature yet, but they're definitely taking shape and looking more like traditional locs. Maturing Stage (18-36 months): At this point, your locs are starting to hang more, become denser, and are fully cylindrical. They are much stronger and less prone to unraveling. You'll notice less frizz, and your locs will feel more solid. Rooted/Elder Stage (3+ years): Congratulations, your locs are fully locked, strong, dense, and beautiful! They have settled into their permanent form and continue to grow and thrive. At my 6-month mark, I'm confidently saying I'm embracing the Budding Stage. It's a phase that requires a lot of trust in the process and a ton of patience. My personal experience involves a lot of moisturizing – water, light oils like jojoba or almond, and a good rosewater spray have been my best friends to keep them from feeling too dry or brittle. I'm also trying to be super gentle with retwists, focusing on scalp health, and resisting the urge to constantly play with them (it's hard!). For anyone else around the 6-month mark, don't worry about the frizz or the seemingly slow progress. This is where the magic happens!
