Switching from freshwater to oceanic geography, many people are surprised to learn that France, not the traditionally assumed superpowers like the U.S. or Russia, claims the largest exclusive economic zones (EEZ) — exclusive rights to ocean resources within 200 nautical miles of their coastlines. This is largely due to France's many overseas territories scattered around the globe, extending its oceanic reach significantly. Understanding EEZs is key to grasping modern geopolitical strategies. These ocean territories grant countries fishing rights, opportunities for mining seabed resources, and locations to establish wind farms. Interestingly, countries like those in the South China Sea have constructed artificial islands to broaden their claims, illustrating how geography intertwines with politics and economics. On land, the contrast is evident with former colonial empires losing vast portions of their territories over centuries. The British and French empires, which once controlled millions of square kilometers, now hold just fractions of their former lands. For instance, France retains only about 0.01% of its colonial empire through overseas territories, while Spain and the Mongol empire have also seen dramatic reductions. Sharing these facts from a personal perspective, I've always found such geographical insights deepen my appreciation for history and natural science. It also highlights how geography affects everything from biodiversity in deep freshwater lakes to international relations over oceanic control—showing the diverse factors that shape our world today.
