4th semester/ beginning January 🥰
Baby girl made her debut December 22, 2025 and then 3 to 4 short weeks later I return to school to finish out my fourth semester and I had my first day of preceptorship a week after school started and so far so good. I didn’t get my dream placement, which was labor and delivery or Mother Baby instead I got pre-/post Op/PACU which was awesome. I never knew what a PACU nurse did but first day was great so many moving parts and so many things to do, but it made the time fly by and made missing my baby a little less hard. I just gotta hold on tight and finish out this semester and make it all worth it in the end.
Good luck to all the nursing students returning back to a new semester or just start out!!
Returning to nursing school shortly after having a baby is an intense but rewarding experience. From personal experience, balancing the demands of a newborn with academic responsibilities requires planning, patience, and support. I found that having a clear routine helped me navigate the busy days, especially during my preceptorship in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). PACU nursing involves closely monitoring patients as they recover from anesthesia after surgery. It’s a fast-paced environment requiring attentiveness to vital signs, pain levels, and potential complications. Even though it wasn’t my initial dream placement in labor and delivery, I quickly appreciated the complexity and importance of PACU nursing. The variety of tasks made each day dynamic and helped the time pass quickly, which was a welcome distraction from missing my baby during long shifts. For fellow nursing students balancing parenthood and school, I recommend creating a strong support system including family, friends, and professors. Don’t hesitate to communicate your situation — many schools offer resources for student-parents. Prioritizing self-care and asking for help when needed is essential to manage stress. Embracing the challenges of postpartum recovery while pursuing your nursing career can be overwhelming but incredibly fulfilling. Completing my fourth semester and growing into my nursing role with hands-on experience in PACU has made me more confident and determined to succeed. For any student returning to school or starting a new semester, keep focused on your goals and remember that every step forward is progress, no matter how small.
