In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, my sister and I are working on a book.

This isn’t just a story. It’s about the reality of what we’ve lived through. the impact of domestic abuse, the weight of being unheard, and the trauma that can come from systems meant to protect us. It touches on experiences with police brutality, control, and the long-lasting effects those moments leave on mental health.

We’re writing this for the people who have felt silenced, overlooked, or dismissed. For the ones still carrying things they were never given the space to process.

Healing is not linear. Speaking up is hard. But stories like this deserve to be told.

If even one person reads it and feels less alone, then it matters.

... Read moreWriting about mental health and trauma has always been challenging for me, but reading stories like these brings a sense of connection that’s hard to find elsewhere. When someone shares their personal journey through domestic abuse and encounters with oppressive systems, it helps break the silence so many survivors carry. I appreciate the honest portrayal of how healing isn’t a straight path. There are days of progress, and there are setbacks. But having a space to express feelings—validating those experiences—is essential to recovery. The acknowledgment that mental health struggles can stem from real, traumatic events like police brutality and control helps widen the conversation beyond standard narratives. Personally, I’ve seen how society often overlooks or dismisses survivors’ pain, leaving many to bear invisible burdens. Memoirs like this one create a platform not only for raising awareness during Mental Health Awareness Month but also for fostering empathy year-round. They remind us all that we are not alone and that reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. The referenced book, a memoir of survival and redemption, speaks volumes in emphasizing that no story of hardship should be buried or silenced. For anyone carrying trauma, reading about others who have walked similar paths can be empowering. It motivates one to keep going and to be kind to their mind amid the struggle. If you are someone who has ever felt unseen or unheard, know that your story matters. Sharing these narratives shines a light on often ignored experiences and opens doors to healing and hope. As the authors mention, even if just one person feels less alone by reading this, then the effort is meaningful beyond words.
