When it comes to affordable skincare products, it’s easy to get swept up by viral trends and glowing reviews on social media. However, my experience with several ULTA favorites showed me that what works for one person doesn’t necessarily work for everyone—especially if you have sensitive, oily, or combination skin. Starting with the ELF Squeeze Me Lip Balm, although the fruity scents and cute packaging were appealing, I found the texture uncomfortable. The balm felt sticky and flaky, and the overly bright colors didn’t look natural on my lips. In my opinion, a good lip balm should provide hydration without sacrificing comfort or appearance. The hype around The Ordinary’s hyaluronic acid and niacinamide serums is understandable given their affordability and ingredient focus. Yet, doubling down on these concentrated serums led to irritation and a sticky feeling on my skin. I realized that many skincare products today already include these ingredients in balanced amounts, so layering multiple serums may be overkill and potentially harmful to sensitive skin barriers. For persistent blemishes, I turned to Peach Slices’ deep blemish microdarts hoping for quick results. Unfortunately, these microdarts didn’t reduce my breakouts effectively. Regular acne spot dots yielded better results for me, emphasizing that sometimes simpler or less aggressive treatments can be more effective. Among viral K-beauty sensations, COSRX’s Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence is touted for hydration and glow. Contrary to this, it felt sticky against my skin and failed to impart the expected moisture boost. I have found other snail mucin products to be more effective and less tacky, highlighting the importance of patch testing before fully committing to trendy products. Lastly, the HERO Cosmetics Superlight Sunscreen, with its green tint promising redness reduction, unfortunately gave me a white cast and did not layer well under makeup due to pilling and uneven texture. Sunscreens should protect without compromising makeup application or skin appearance, so this was a major downside. What I’ve learned through my skincare journey is the importance of tailoring product choices to your own skin type and needs rather than following trends blindly. Affordable doesn’t always mean better or suitable for everyone. Reading ingredient lists, patch testing, and managing expectations can save you time, money, and frustration. If you have oily or combination skin like me, pay attention to how products interact with your skin rather than relying solely on popularity. Sometimes investing in fewer, well-formulated essentials tailored for your skin type will yield better results than chasing viral sensations.
