Even with sensitive skin, I still love using exfoliants and retinols to even out my skin! This is the skin cycling routine I follow to keep my skin calm, hydrated, but properly treated:
Night 1️⃣: Exfoliation
• After washing my face, I go in with this 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant from Paula's Choice! It does a really good job of reducing the blackheads on my nose and the pores in my t-zone!
** DO NOT use any other active ingredients on this night, otherwise the skin will be irritated!
Night 2️⃣: Retinol
• To renew my skin, I go in with this retinol from Hero Cosmetics! This will help even out my skin and give it a new healthy look
** Just like night 1, I do not use any other active ingredients!
Night 3️⃣ & 4️⃣: RECOVERY
• This step is a non-negotiable in the skin cycling schedule, as it helps nourish the skin back to health after all of the active ingredients! I go in my with my trusted Peach slices snail mucin toner and Vanicream daily moisturizer to hydrate my skin!
** On these nights, I use minimal products so that my skin stays calm and moisturized!
⭐️ A step we cannot skip: It is especially important to apply sunscreen every morning while skin cycling because of all the active ingredients and skin renewing!
... Read moreAs someone who's been practicing skin cycling for a while, I can personally attest to its benefits—especially for sensitive and combination skin types like mine. The key to success is sticking to the structured routine that balances treatment with recovery. On exfoliation nights, I use a gentle 2% BHA liquid exfoliant, just like Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting formula, which targets blackheads and unclogs pores without over-drying. It’s important to use only that active ingredient on this night to avoid irritation.
The next night, I switch to a retinol product—something mild but effective like Hero Cosmetics’ 0.75% encapsulated retinol blend with a rescue balm complex. This type of retinol renews skin and evens tone while being less likely to irritate sensitive skin. Like exfoliation night, I avoid mixing retinol with other actives to keep my skin barrier intact.
Nights three and four are all about recovery. Here, I use nourishing products such as a snail mucin toner with hyaluronic acid and ceramides, similar to Peach Slices’ toner, and a rich moisturizer like Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer. These products provide hydration and strengthen the skin barrier, which is critical after using active ingredients.
A critical step I never skip is applying sunscreen every morning. Since active ingredients like BHAs and retinol can make your skin more vulnerable to UV damage, sun protection is an absolute must to prevent irritation and maintain skin health.
A tip I learned over time is to listen to your skin—if it becomes red or dry, extending the recovery period or adjusting product strength can help. Also, avoid layering multiple actives in one night, as that usually leads to overwhelm and flare-ups.
Ultimately, skin cycling has transformed my skincare routine, giving me clearer pores, a more even complexion, and a hydrated glow without the irritation I experienced with daily actives. If you have sensitive or combination skin, trying this routine with gentle, trusted products might be just what your skin needs!
