5 Things That Will Keep You in the Barber & Beauty
#hairisaprivilege ✂️💆🏽♀️ 5 Things That Will Keep You in the Barber & Beauty Industry for YEARS
These are non-negotiables in my routine.
People always talk about comfortable shoes, eating right, and working out—and yes, school already told you that. What they don’t always teach you is how to protect your body long-term in an industry that’s physically demanding every single day.
These are the things I’ve lived by.
⸻
1️⃣ A Bed That Actually Supports Your Body
We stand all day. Our backs, hips, and legs are constantly tight. Sleeping on the wrong mattress throws your body off before the day even starts.
A supportive bed helps you rest properly, wake up aligned, and move without pain. This isn’t a luxury—it’s career maintenance.
⸻
2️⃣ Hand Massage & Body Recovery
If you’re holding clippers, combs, shears, or hot tools all day, repetition adds up.
Massaging your hands helps prevent carpal tunnel, arthritis, and grip fatigue. Add monthly body massages when you can—your hands are your livelihood.
⸻
3️⃣ Stretching (Pilates or Yoga)
Standing in one place for 8–10+ hours stiffens your hips and spine. Going home and laying straight down locks everything up.
Pilates or yoga keeps your body mobile, improves posture, and releases stress—physically and mentally.
⸻
4️⃣ Pedicures & Foot Care
We live on our feet. Period.
Pedicures remove calluses, relieve pressure, and keep your feet feeling good—especially with the right shoes. It’s important to be pampered just like your clients. This is a monthly must for me.
⸻
5️⃣ Chiropractic Care & Alignment
Aligning your spine, neck, and lower body is essential—especially in a digital world where we’re constantly hunched over clients and phones.
Proper alignment protects your posture, movement, and longevity in this industry.
Working in the barber and beauty industry is incredibly rewarding but also physically taxing. From my personal experience, maintaining physical wellness isn't just about surviving your shift but thriving throughout your career. One key thing I’ve realized is the absolute importance of quality rest. Investing in a mattress that supports your entire body can dramatically reduce the tension and pain you might otherwise feel after standing all day. When you wake up properly aligned, your energy levels and focus improve, which directly impacts your creativity and client interactions. Hand care is another vital aspect often overlooked. Regular hand massages relieve tension and reduce risks of repetitive strain injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome. I personally incorporate self-massage and occasionally visit a professional masseuse, which has helped my hands stay flexible and strong despite the repetitive motions involved with tools. Incorporating Pilates and yoga into your routine made a huge difference for me, especially in easing hip and spine stiffness. These practices improve posture and flexibility, essential for standing long hours and leaning over clients without strain. For foot care, pedicures aren’t just about aesthetics—they are a form of maintenance that keeps feet healthy, relieves pressure points, and reduces discomfort. Pairing them with supportive footwear is a game-changer. Lastly, regular chiropractic checkups have been transformative. Keeping my spine and neck aligned safeguards me against postural problems caused by constantly hunching over workstations and phones. It truly protects my longevity in the field. By prioritizing these five areas—proper bed support, hand and body massages, stretching through Pilates or yoga, dedicated foot care, and chiropractic alignment—you build resilience enabling you to enjoy a long, fulfilling career in the barber and beauty profession. Remember, your body is your most valuable tool. Treat it with care, and it will support your passion for years to come.
