Hey everyone! As an artist, one of my absolute favorite things to do is bring my original characters (OCs) to life through digital art. There's just something magical about seeing personalities emerge from your imagination onto the screen. Today, I wanted to dive a little deeper into two of my main OCs, Smiley and Greenie, who you might have already glimpsed in some of my art pieces! Smiley, with that distinctive yellow face and wide, toothy grin, is often seen sporting a bold red hoodie. The red eye band adds a mysterious yet playful touch to their overall look. When I was designing Smiley, I really wanted to create a character that exuded both a mischievous charm and a strong competitive streak. You can often find Smiley instigating fun challenges, like trying to get Greenie into a game of "Smash"! It's those little interactions that truly define their character and make them feel real to me. Designing custom character expressions and outfits, like Smiley’s signature red hoodie, is key to making them stand out. Then there's Greenie, a wonderful contrast to Smiley. Greenie’s green face and cozy striped scarf give them a more grounded, perhaps slightly exasperated, vibe—especially when Smiley is around! Their dynamic is one of my favorites to explore; the playful banter and friendly rivalry make for endless storytelling possibilities. It's not always just Smiley and Greenie, though. We’ve also got characters like Cher, who sometimes pops in unexpectedly, perhaps holding a mysterious red item, adding another layer to their world. Crafting these unique character designs, from a simple striped scarf to a detailed red eye band, is a journey of constant discovery. Creating digital art for these characters allows me to explore so many different scenarios and emotions. From initial sketches outlining their basic shapes and forms, to adding intricate details and vibrant colors, every step is exciting. I think about their backstories, their quirks, and how they would react in various situations. For example, imagining Smiley's enthusiasm for gaming, specifically "Smash," helps me visualize dynamic poses and expressions. It's about building a consistent visual language for each character, ensuring that even a quick glance at their yellow face or green face tells you something about them. The beauty of OCs is that they can evolve with you. What starts as a simple design, perhaps a "tv head oc" concept, can grow into a rich, detailed character with complex relationships and adventures. I love seeing how their personalities shine through in each piece of art, whether it’s a quick sketch or a full-blown animation.
