I have to admit that this was amazing! I like to warm up my pie and eat it hot with a dollop of icecream on top. The only trouble I had with making this is that the pie crust wanted to fall apart when frying. I just flipped it slowly though to combat this!

Let me know if you try this and what you think!

... Read moreGetting into the kitchen to whip up something truly special is one of my favorite ways to spend an afternoon. There's just something magical about homemade desserts, especially when they bring everyone together. Recently, my daughter and I embarked on a delicious adventure, creating our very own apple pie and a batch of creamy homemade ice cream. It was such a rewarding experience, and I wanted to share some of the extra tips and tricks we picked up along the way, especially for anyone looking to make these classic treats. First, let's talk about that amazing apple pie. The key to a fantastic filling starts with the right apples – a mix of sweet and tart like Honeycrisp and Granny Smith works wonders. For our filling, we used freshly chopped apples, combining them with granulated sugar, brown sugar, a generous dash of cinnamon, a pinch of allspice, and a whisper of nutmeg. A splash of lemon juice brightens everything up and keeps the apples from browning. We cooked this mixture down until the apples were tender and the sauce thickened, creating that perfect gooey consistency. Now, about the pie crust! The original recipe involved frying, which gave it a wonderfully crispy texture, but I did encounter the challenge of the crust wanting to fall apart. My trick was to ensure the dough was well-chilled before handling and to be super gentle when flipping. If frying isn't your thing, you can absolutely bake your apple pies! Just brush them with an egg wash for a golden sheen and bake until bubbly and golden brown. Adding a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar on top before baking adds an extra layer of deliciousness. Next up, the star alongside the pie: homemade ice cream! We opted for a no-churn method, which is surprisingly simple and yields incredibly creamy results. You'll need cold heavy whipping cream, whipped until stiff peaks form. Then, gently fold in sweetened condensed milk and a generous amount of vanilla extract (or vanilla paste for a richer flavor). This is where the fun really begins with mix-ins! We love adding caramel chips and peanut butter cups, just like some of the store-bought favorites, but you could go for crushed cookies, chocolate chunks, or fresh fruit. The key is to fold them in carefully so you don't deflate the whipped cream. Pour into a freezer-safe container and let it chill for at least 6 hours, or preferably overnight, to get that perfect scoopable texture. The images in the article showed a container filled with ice cream and mix-ins, demonstrating just how customizable this recipe is! There’s nothing quite like a warm, fried homemade apple pie with a dollop of that cold, creamy ice cream melting on top. It’s a match made in dessert heaven! Don't be afraid to experiment with your spices or mix-ins to truly make these recipes your own. It's all about enjoying the process and the delicious outcome. Give it a try, and let me know your favorite combinations!
