... Read moreHey everyone! So, like many of you, I used to be SO confused about why some products worked wonders for my friends but did nothing for me. My hair always felt either too dry or weighed down, and I just couldn't crack the code. That's until I learned about Hair Porosity!!! It's a total game-changer for understanding your hair's unique needs, and honestly, it's one of the easiest tests you can do at home. I tried the simple water test, and it was truly eye-opening! Here’s how you can do it too: The DIY Hair Porosity Water Test: Get a clean strand: Gently pull a single strand of hair from your head. Make sure it's clean and free of any product buildup (shampoo and rinse well before testing for the most accurate results). Fill a glass with water: Grab a clear glass and fill it with room temperature water. Observe: Place your single strand of hair into the glass of water and watch what happens for about 2-4 minutes. Don't swish it around; just let it sit. What Your Results Mean for Your Hair Porosity: Low Porosity Hair (Floats on Top): If your strand just chilled on the surface or took a very long time to slowly sink, welcome to the low porosity club! My hair used to be like this, and it means your hair cuticles are tightly closed. Products tend to sit on top of the hair shaft rather than being absorbed, leading to buildup or a greasy feel without actual moisture penetration. I learned to use lightweight, liquid-based products, apply them to damp hair, and sometimes use a little indirect heat (like a warm towel wrap after applying a deep conditioner) to help open the cuticles and allow products to penetrate. Heavy butters just weighed it down and made it feel stringy. Medium Porosity Hair (Sinks Gradually to the Middle): If your hair slowly sank to the middle of the glass, congrats—you probably have Medium porosity! This is often considered the ideal porosity type, as your cuticles are balanced, allowing for good moisture absorption and retention. You can experiment more with products, but consistency is still key. My friend, who has medium porosity hair, finds that a good balance of moisturizing and sealing products works perfectly without much fuss. She still deep conditions regularly to maintain that balance. High Porosity Hair (Sinks Quickly to the Bottom): Now, if your hair plunged straight to the bottom quickly, you likely have High!! porosity. This usually means your cuticles are open or have gaps, allowing moisture in very quickly, but also letting it escape just as fast. This can often be a result of chemical treatments, heat damage, or genetics. My cousin has high porosity hair, and she swears by heavier creams, butters, and oils to seal in moisture. She always uses leave-in conditioners and tries to avoid excessive heat styling like the plague. Humectants are also her best friend, especially in humid climates, to draw moisture from the air into her hair. Knowing your hair porosity totally changed my product choices and how I approach my haircare routine. No more guessing! It helped me understand why my hair felt dry even after conditioning, or why it got greasy so fast. It's not just about what products you buy, but understanding how your hair interacts with them. This simple test really empowers you to tailor your routine and achieve healthier, happier hair. Give it a try – you might be surprised by what you learn!
