The journey is relatively easy. We rent a car from downtown Takayama. It takes about an hour and a half. There is a parking lot in front of the basket station. You can buy a ticket and go up. No hassle.
The basket will take you up to two ranges along the way to see beautiful mountain and forest views, but the real highlight is when you get to the top. Because the view is 360 degrees wide open, you can see the Japanese Alps lined up with your eyes. It's cool, fresh and quiet. It's perfect for a walk, a view, or just a ride.
There are scenic spots, cafes and souvenir shops above. It takes about 1.5-2 hours to get there before taking the basket down.
