Design the Dream Life: Create the Future You Want with a Will🕶
It captures key ideas and steps from an interview with Debbie Millman on Mel Robbins' podcast, which focuses on creating the future we desire with intention, by focusing on "possibility" rather than "possibility of actually happening," and overcoming the fear of desiring and failing.
.
Crucial Philosophy: Design is Creation with Intention
Design is not limited to building things, but "creating everything we do on a whim." Whether it's designing a logo, a room, or a meal, to designing our own lives, the core of design is creating things that never existed with our mind.
The important idea is to focus on "what is possible" instead of thinking about "what is possible," which is probable, which is often caused by fear of failure, rejection, or shame. Millman points out that many people tend to judge what is impossible before even trying, and she also believes that "confidence" is something we do not rely on, but action to build confidence later.
Life Design Exercises: A Guide Map to Dreams
The exercise was adapted from renowned designer Milton Glazer, who proved powerful and changed people's lives a lot.
1. The right time is 10 years from now.
This exercise invites you to "time travel" into the future for the next 10 years. Such a long time frame will allow you to fully release the imagination without thinking about the current reality.
2. Start with the beginning
The first sentence you have to write is "Date [current day and month + 10 years]. I woke up and..."After that, imagine your ideal life in detail: where you are, what you're doing with who, what your environment is like, what your health is like, what your career is doing, and how you have an attitude towards money.
3. Use questions to reflect yourself
In addition to daily life details, try answering these questions to understand yourself more:
5 What Would You Do If You Knew You Would Never Fail?
What you tell yourself you can't do, but what is the truth?
What do you define "happiness"?
Who are you jealous of? And what does that feeling tell you?
4. Announce your intention out loud.
It is important to read something written out loud to someone we trust, because "accepting" your desires out loud will magically integrate that intention into your subconscious mind.
5. Review and expand
After sharing what has been written, revisit it to add new details or inspiration you have received from others. Doing so will further broaden the "possibilities" of your life.
Common obstacles and how to cope
Stress and Fear: The stress of imagining a future yet to come is normal, but seeing a bright future will help create "Hope," a great force, and enable you to move past current obstacles flexibly.
Trapped "Method": Most people tend to get caught up in the question of "how to do it" and use this as an excuse not to start; this exercise therefore focuses on "dreaming big and reckless" without paying attention to the method from the beginning.
Comparisons with others: Comparing your own life to others or following family expectations may limit your desires. This exercise therefore helps you truly define success according to your own needs.
Lack of clarity on what is needed: If you still don't know what you want, try starting a small project like "Project 100 Days" that gives you something creative every day to explore what brings you happiness and expertise.
Priority summary
Designing life on a whim is an incredibly powerful process. It's not just dreaming, it's taking concrete action to create the future you want. It's important to dare to dream big, overcome fear, and act immediately without waiting for every condition to be perfect, because taking action today will create "hope" and change your life in the days ahead like you never expected.
