The "Collecting People" concept
For most founders, the overwhelming feeling of trouble is normal, but Steven Bartlett proposes that success comes not from working harder, but from building smarter teams; this is not just employment, but a personal mission to bring great individuals into life.
1.Adjust Mindset: This is a people recruitment game, not a technology game.
The most basic lesson is to change the perspective. Vinod Khosla (the famous Venture Capitalist) says that people often tell you that business is a game of technology, but it's actually a game of recruiting people. Instead of seeing employment as an occasional job, it has to become a core function of the business. Your time should be spent looking for Talent (such as sitting on LinkedIn until late) because good innovation and production are all by-products of the quality of the people you gather.
2. Break all rules for gifted people (Talent)
The best people often don't fit into the same framework, so does the process of hiring them. Georgia Gibson's case study is the best example:
She plans for herself to get a 99% Culture Test score for attention.
When Bartlett saw a glimpse, he "broke the rules" by immediately taking her flying to Bali to get to know, and convincing her to quit the company she founded.
Lesson: When you meet someone who is "Rare" (rare) and "Aligned" (chemistry match), don't use the normal HR process. You have to do whatever it takes to get him on your bus.
3. Stop solving the "old problem" yourself.
There are two types of problems in business: Old Problems and New Problems.
Old problems: finance, HR, law, accounting. These things have been solved millions of times.
New Problems: Innovation, AI, Building Business Advantage The biggest mistake is that the Founder tries to learn to solve old problems on its own. The solution is to hire someone who has already solved them so that you can focus your time on the new problems at the heart of the business.
4. The goal is not growth, but "covenant land" (The Promised Land).
Chasing growth numbers can lead to infinite pain. The real goal should be "covenant land," which is where businesses can run on their own because you have leaders who are so good that they can tell you what to do (instead of ordering them). This state will free you to step back and see the big picture, use your instincts, and drive your core vision, which is what "only you can do."
5.Use these 2 filters: Do they raise the standard? And Wired or Tired?
Among the complexities of choosing people, use two simple principles:
Bar Raiser: The idea from Amazon is that every new person who comes in has to make the team's averages higher. Old employees should feel, "If I apply now, I won't get a job" because the standards are getting higher.
Wired or Tired: Use your instinct to measure energy. After talking to him, you feel "Wired" or "Tired."
6. I want to grow up. I have to be the "stupidest person in the room."
Steven Bartlett has a conversation with Kevin Hart and finds one truth: comfort in self-ignorance is Superpower. The best room to "accumulate people" is the room where you have the least knowledge. Daring to ask, "What is Cash flow?" is not embarrassing, but a way to identify a talented person who knows what you don't know. If you're the smartest in the room, you're in the wrong room.
7. You will make a mistake. The secret is to "manage quickly."
Even if you have good principles, you will hire the wrong person. It is important to fix them as quickly as possible. Bartlett admits that there are only one or three days of staff. To hold out difficult conversations is not good for anyone. To be invited out is to honor the whole person (to put him in the right place) and to honor the rest of the team (in protecting corporate culture).
Conclusion: Collecting people is not just a way of doing business, it's the art of finding "Outsiders" or alienated people whose vision matches you to create a space where you feel less alone in creating great things.
