... Read moreMy fellow oily skin warriors, you know the struggle is real! Finding a powder that truly keeps shine at bay, blurs pores, and doesn't settle into fine lines feels like a never-ending quest. While I've shared my honest thoughts on specific products, I want to dive a bit deeper into how to make any powder work better for our skin type, and tackle some common concerns I've seen pop up. First off, let's talk about application – it's a game-changer! For me, a good base is crucial. I always start with a mattifying primer and sometimes even blot my face before applying foundation, let alone powder. When it comes to the powder itself, pressing it onto the skin with a puff or dense brush, rather than sweeping, makes a huge difference. This technique helps to really set the makeup and absorb oil more effectively, giving that desired matte finish. I focus on my T-zone, forehead, and chin – my usual oil slick areas – and then lightly dust the rest of my face. One common question is about loose vs. pressed powder. Personally, I use both! A loose powder like Huda Beauty is fantastic for setting my entire face after liquid makeup. It's often more finely milled, which means it helps achieve that blurring effect and can be incredibly oil-controlling, especially in hot weather. For me, it helps lock everything down for hours. However, for quick touch-ups on the go, a pressed powder is my absolute best friend. My Charlotte Tilbury compact is perfect for this—it's super convenient and offers a natural-matte finish without looking cakey, even when reapplied. It’s also great for smoothing out any areas that might start to look a bit shiny or textured throughout the day. Now, let's address some specific oily skin woes. Many of us worry about powder settling into fine lines or emphasizing texture. I experienced this with some powders, like the Elf Halo Glow which, unfortunately, emphasized texture and wasn't truly matte. To avoid this, less is often more, especially under the eyes. Also, using a damp sponge to press powder can create a smoother, more seamless look. If you have concerns about acne-prone skin, always look for non-comedogenic formulas that won't clog pores. While not all brands explicitly state this, reading ingredient lists and patch testing can help. For those dealing with dullness, a good blurring powder can actually make your complexion appear brighter and more even, giving that airbrushed look we all love. Longevity is another big one. We want our makeup to last, especially on oily skin! To achieve a long-lasting finish, layering is key. Start with an oil-controlling primer, then your foundation, and finally, set generously with a powder that boasts good staying power. The Huda Beauty powder, for instance, is fantastic for its long-lasting qualities. And if you're curious about "waterproof" powders, while few are truly waterproof, those that are highly oil-controlling and humidity-resistant will offer better protection against sweat and moisture. Finally, for my budget-conscious beauties, don't overlook drugstore options! As I mentioned, Maybelline Fit Me pressed powder is a decent option on a budget and offers decent oil control. While it might cling to dry patches or be less blurring than high-end options, it's a solid choice for everyday. There are also many great Charlotte Tilbury setting powder dupes out there if you search around! Finding an affordable option that delivers on oil control and a smooth finish can be a real win. Ultimately, navigating the world of powders with oily skin is all about understanding your specific needs and experimenting. I hope these extra tips help you achieve that perfectly matte, blurring, and long-lasting finish you're looking for!
