... Read moreYou guys, I am SO beyond excited about my latest book haul! Seriously, I practically floated out of the bookstore with these treasures. While every single book in this haul is a gem, I have to talk about one in particular that has me absolutely buzzing: 'Cinderella Is Dead' by Kalynn Bayron. When I saw that cover – a fierce Black woman in a beautiful gown looking back in a forest – I knew I had to grab it. And then, reading the synopsis? My jaw dropped!
This isn't your grandma's Cinderella story, let me tell you. Forget the happily-ever-after with Prince Charming. This book takes place 200 years after Cinderella found her prince, and now all teenage girls are forced to attend an annual ball to be chosen by men. If they're not chosen, they disappear. It's a dark, feminist, and LGBTQ+ inclusive retelling, and honestly, it sounds like everything I've been craving in a fantasy novel. It’s a powerful narrative that flips the classic on its head, exploring themes of love, freedom, and defying oppressive systems.
Now, I know some of you might be thinking, "But what about a 'cinderella read aloud' for kids?" And yes, while this particular version might be a bit too intense for very young children (it deals with some heavy themes like oppression and rebellion), it's absolutely perfect for a captivating read-aloud for older teens or even adults! Imagine gathering your friends for a book club and taking turns reading chapters of this gripping tale. The suspense, the fight for freedom, the unexpected twists – it would make for such an engaging group reading experience. It challenges the traditional narrative in such a powerful way, sparking amazing discussions about societal expectations and finding your own path. This is a story that truly benefits from being shared and discussed.
Beyond 'Cinderella Is Dead,' this haul was full of incredible bargain finds! I also managed to snag 'Crown Of Midnight' by Sarah J. Maas, which I've heard so many amazing things about, and 'A Whole New World' by Liz Braswell – another fairy tale retelling that promises a dark twist on Aladdin. Then there's 'Highly Suspicious and Unfairly Cute' by Talia Hibbert, which just sounds like a delightful enemies-to-lovers rom-com, and 'Not How I Pictured It' by Robin Lefler, which looks like a fun, quirky read. Oh, and I almost forgot 'We Can't Keep Meeting Like This' by Rachel Lynn Solomon, another contemporary romance that's been on my TBR. Finding these at such great prices – like those 'BARGAIN $5.00' and 'BARGAIN $5.97' stickers I spotted – truly makes a bookworm's heart sing! It's such a thrill to discover fantastic stories without breaking the bank.
My personal tip for finding these kinds of deals? Always check the bargain bins, even in smaller independent bookstores, and keep an eye out for sales at larger chains. Sometimes the best treasures are hidden in plain sight, just waiting to be unearthed. You never know what gems you’ll unearth, and those '20% SAVE AND MORE' stickers are always a welcome sight! I'm already planning my reading schedule, and I can't wait to share my full reviews with you all once I've devoured them. Which one should I read first? Let me know in the comments! Happy reading, everyone!
