The most common auxiliary verbs are forms of 'be,' 'do,' and 'have.' Let's look at them: To Be (am, is, are, was, were, been, being): This one is super versatile! We use 'to be' to form continuous tenses (like present continuous: "Mr. Bob is building the company from the ground up," as you can see in my notes from a lesson) and the passive voice ("The company was built by Mr. Bob"). It tells us when an action is happening or that something is being acted upon. To Do (do, does, did): This auxiliary is a lifesaver for forming questions and negative sentences, especially in the simple present and simple past tenses. For example, instead of saying "You like coffee?" we typically ask, "*Do* you like coffee?" Or, to make it negative, "I do not like coffee." It helps you talk about experiences and completed actions accurately. Beyond these main three, we also have modal auxiliary verbs like *can, could, will, would, shall, should, may, might, must*. These verbs add extra meaning about possibility, necessity, permission, or obligation to the main verb. For example, "I can speak English," or "You should practice daily." Now, regarding how auxiliary verbs handle singular and plural subjects: it's not that the auxiliary verb itself becomes singular or plural, but rather it agrees with the subject's number. For instance, you say "I am learning," but "He is learning," and "They are learning." Similarly, "I have learned," but "She has learned," and "We have learned." Mastering this agreement is crucial for sounding natural and correct in English.
