... Read moreHey everyone! School mornings are always a rush for me, and figuring out what to do with my hair without adding extra stress is key. Based on what you all are searching for, it seems like Dutch braid buns and braided ponytails are super popular for school, and for good reason—they're stylish, keep hair out of your face, and can be pretty durable through a long day of classes and after-school activities! I've been experimenting with different styles to keep my hair looking fresh and neat, and I'm excited to share some of my personal tips and tricks to rock these looks.
Mastering the Dutch Braid Bun for School
The Dutch braid bun is one of my absolute favorites because it looks so polished and stays put all day. It's essentially an inverted French braid, creating a beautiful raised pattern. Here’s how I get mine to look perfect for school:
Prep Your Hair: I always start with clean, detangled hair. Sometimes, if my hair is a little too soft, I'll spritz in some dry shampoo or texturizing spray to give it a bit more grip, which makes braiding easier.
Part it Up: You can do a middle part or a side part, depending on the look you're going for. I usually go for a middle part for a classic, symmetrical bun.
Start Braiding: Take a section of hair at your hairline. Divide it into three strands. Instead of crossing the sections over each other like a French braid, you cross them *under*. As you braid, keep adding small sections of new hair from the sides to your outer strands, incorporating them into the braid. Keep the tension firm but comfortable.
Braid to the Nape: Continue braiding down your head, following the curve of your scalp, until you reach the nape of your neck. From there, you can finish with a regular three-strand braid all the way to the ends.
Create the Bun: Once you have your full braid, coil it into a neat bun at the back of your head. Secure it firmly with hairpins. I find criss-crossing the pins helps it stay extra secure. A little hairspray can lock everything in place, especially for those flyaways!
This style is fantastic for keeping all your hair securely out of your face, perfect for focus in class or during sports.
Perfecting the Braided Ponytail for Long Hair
For those of us with long hair, a braided ponytail is a lifesaver. It prevents tangles, looks incredibly chic, and comes in so many variations. I've seen some amazing box braids styled into a high ponytail which looks super elegant, or even just a simple three-strand braid that keeps your curls contained. Here’s my go-to method for a high braided ponytail:
High & Tight: Gather all your hair into a high ponytail. Use a strong, snag-free elastic to secure it firmly. Make sure it's smooth at the crown – a comb can help you get rid of any bumps.
Choose Your Braid: You can go for a classic three-strand braid, a fishtail braid for a more intricate look, or even a four-strand braid if you're feeling adventurous! If you have long black braids mixed with curly hair or long, wavy black hair, just grab them all and braid them down.
Braid It Down: Braid the ponytail all the way to the ends. Secure the end with a smaller, clear elastic. You can also leave a few inches unbraided for a more relaxed vibe.
Personal Touch: Sometimes, I like to gently tug at the sides of the braid to make it look a little thicker and fuller. If you have curly braided pigtails, you can simply gather each pigtail into a separate braid for a cute, youthful look, maybe even adding red ribbons as an accessory!
This style is super versatile and perfect for any school day. It keeps all your hair contained, which is great for windy days or keeping it off your neck when you're busy.
General Tips for Long-Lasting School Braids
Conditioning is Key: Braids look best on healthy hair. A good leave-in conditioner can make your hair smoother and easier to braid, especially if you have long, curly black hair or mixed black and brown box braids.
Practice Makes Perfect: Don't get discouraged if your first attempt isn't flawless. Braiding takes practice!
Accessorize: Don't be afraid to add little touches! A cute scrunchie, a few hair clips, or those red ribbons can personalize your look. Even styling your baby hairs can add a polished finish to any braided style, whether it’s intricate cornrow braids or a simple ponytail.
I hope these tips help you rock your back-to-school braids with confidence! Let me know which one you try first!
