Things internship showed me

Hey! I’m a therapist and here was something I have learned from interning in psych practices after more than a year! These are simple and may very be quite common sense but most of us don’t realise how much we overlook these things.

... Read moreDuring my internship as a psychology intern, I discovered that the therapeutic process extends far beyond the official counseling sessions. One of the most profound realizations was how significant the small, seemingly mundane interactions can be. For example, the warm welcome a client receives at the front desk can set the tone for their entire visit, providing an initial sense of safety and acceptance that is often overlooked in mental health care. I also learned that individuals seeking therapy are more than just their diagnosis or presenting problem. Each person carries a multifaceted identity—whether as a child, partner, friend, or colleague—and acknowledging this complexity fosters deeper empathy and better support. Witnessing this shift in perspective was a pivotal moment that challenged me to truly see clients as whole human beings rather than solely focusing on their struggles. Another eye-opening aspect was recognizing the humanity of mental health professionals themselves. Before starting, I assumed therapists were always composed and unaffected, but the reality is that they, too, grapple with challenges and vulnerabilities. This understanding not only humanizes the clinicians but also reminds us that mental health work is a shared human experience, demanding compassion on all sides. These insights have reshaped how I approach interactions, emphasizing the value of kindness, attentive presence, and appreciating the unseen burdens people carry with them. If you’re considering a career in therapy or mental health, or simply want to deepen your understanding, remember that healing is multifaceted and happens in many forms—not just within the counselor’s office but through every connection along the way.
