Rating the hollow boys series from best to worst

The river Styx series is pretty much here so I wanted to look back on this series.

I’m so excited to be getting another generation of these little freaks and honestly really happy to see what they’re up to as older adults.

Here is how I rated the hollow boys series:

1. The truths we burn

2. The blood we crave

3. The lies we steal

4. The oath we give

How would you rate this series?

... Read moreHey bookworms! Since the new River Styx series is on its way, I've been deep-diving back into Monty Jay's incredible Hollow Boys series, and I just had to share more than just my ranking. Many of you are searching for insights into these dark romance books, and I want to give you a full picture of why this series has such a hold on me, and what you can expect from each installment. First off, if you're new to Monty Jay or the Hollow Boys, prepare for a ride! This isn't your typical sweet romance. It delves into gritty themes, found family, and intensely complicated relationships, all wrapped up in a dark, atmospheric package. The "hollow boys" themselves are these captivating, often broken, characters who find their way to each other and, against all odds, find love. The series order I've shared is also the best reading order to follow the overarching story and character development. Let's break down each book and what made them stand out for me, going from my favorite to my least favorite, but honestly, they're all worth the read! 1. The Truths We Burn: Oh my goodness, this book lives rent-free in my head! The OCR notes mentioned a 'realistic, heartbreaking, and complicated couple,' and that's an understatement. I found their dynamic utterly captivating. The push and pull, the raw emotion, and the way their pasts intertwined made for an unforgettable read. If you're looking for a couple that feels truly earned through struggle, this is it. It perfectly sets the tone for the entire Hollow Boys series, introducing us to the dark, intricate world Monty Jay has created. 2. The Blood We Crave: Following up 'The Truths We Burn' was tough, but 'The Blood We Crave' delivered! The couple in this one truly is unique, as the OCR text highlighted. Their journey felt both painful and incredibly rewarding. There were moments that had me on the edge of my seat, feeling every bit of their struggle and eventual triumph. This book really solidified my love for the interconnected Hollow Boys characters and their complex web of relationships. 3. The Lies We Steal: This one was a solid introduction to another part of the world, as I mentioned in my original post. The couple here was interesting, but I personally didn't connect with them as deeply as the others. And yes, as the OCR picked up, the animal death part was a genuine struggle for me – it just hit a little too hard. Despite that, it's still a crucial piece of the puzzle for the Hollow Boys series narrative, and Monty Jay's writing is, as always, top-notch. You need to read it to understand the full scope of the plot and how it ties into the larger story. 4. The Oath We Give: For me, this was my least favorite of the main stories. While I always appreciate Monty Jay's writing, I felt the plot reached its natural conclusion earlier, and I didn't find myself rooting for this particular couple as much as the others. It wasn't bad by any means, but after the intensity of the previous books, it just didn't hit the same emotional highs for me. Still, it provides closure for some of the lingering questions and completes the initial arc of the Hollow Boys couples. For anyone asking about Hollow Boys reading order, my ranking is essentially how I recommend you read them! They build on each other, and you'll get the most out of the characters and plot twists by going in sequence. If you're wondering books like the Hollow Boys series, I'd suggest checking out other dark romance authors who focus on gritty anti-heroes and intense emotional journeys. Think authors who aren't afraid to explore the shadows. Overall, the Hollow Boys series by Monty Jay is a phenomenal journey into dark romance. It's filled with characters you'll love, hate, and ultimately root for. I'm so excited for the next generation in the River Styx series, and I can't wait to see what other "little freaks" Monty Jay introduces us to! What are your thoughts on my ranking? Have you read any of the special editions?
