So far I’m really enjoying this book. It teaches the power of the tongue. As someone who has let their mouth get them in trouble a lot in life, this book is really teaching me why sometimes the best thing you can say is nothing at all and allow things to unfold as they will.
It talks about everything from how to be heard and respected in conversation without needing to say too much, to gossiping, and how to handle being on the receiving end gossip with grace.
One part of the book that really struck me was the part about how to respond to irritating questions with patience and kindness. Anger and irritation are inevitable but it’s how we control our responses to it that really matters. I love that she gives practical easy to follow tips on how to implement these practices into your life.
If you want to learn more about the power of silence and controlling your words, I recommend giving this book a read through.

... Read moreOkay, so let's talk a bit more about 'Keep It Shut' because it's truly a gem! When you first see the book cover with that zipped mouth graphic, it immediately grabs your attention and perfectly encapsulates the core message: sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do is hold your tongue. It’s such a clever visual cue for the wisdom inside, promising a journey into thoughtful communication and the significant impact of our speech – or lack thereof.
Then there's Karen Ehman, the brilliant mind behind this book. She's not just an author; she's a speaker, a wife, a mom, and someone who clearly understands the daily struggles we face with our words. Her extensive background in ministry and communication shines through, making her advice incredibly relatable and practical. She's built a powerful platform around helping women live with intention, and 'Keep It Shut' is truly a cornerstone of that mission. Learning about her journey as an author and speaker, and how she consistently shares messages of grace and wisdom, really reinforced for me why her insights are so valuable – she's walked the talk, literally. It's not just theory; it's wisdom born from genuine, lived experience, making her a true 'author entrepreneur' in the sense of building a life around purposeful communication.
Beyond the core message of controlling gossip and navigating tricky conversations, I've found her advice on social media incredibly timely. In today's digital world, it's so easy to fire off a quick comment or share something without thinking, often leading to misunderstandings, hurt feelings, or unintended consequences. Karen really makes you pause and consider the impact of your online words, too. It’s about extending grace not just in person but across all platforms. For me, applying her tips has made a huge difference in how I engage online, making my interactions more thoughtful and less reactive.
Another profound point that Karen emphasizes, which I found myself revisiting constantly, is the transformative power of listening. We often focus so much on what we're going to say next that we miss what others are truly communicating. The book gently guides you to become a better, more present listener, which in turn, helps you respond with more empathy and less judgment. This isn't just about avoiding conflict; it's about building stronger, more authentic relationships, whether with family, friends, or colleagues. It's a skill that pays dividends in every area of life. Her straightforward, no-nonsense approach, combined with her warm, encouraging tone, makes these powerful lessons feel incredibly accessible and achievable. If you're looking for a guide to truly transform your communication, both spoken and unspoken, this book is an absolute must-read. It’s more than just a book; it’s a practical toolkit for a more peaceful and intentional life.
