It’s amazing how many incredible day trips and even weekend getaways are just a train ride away. If you're like me and constantly searching for 'day trips from NYC no car' or 'weekend getaways from NYC without a car,' you're in the right place. Let me share some of my personal insights and deeper dives into a few of my favorite spots mentioned, ensuring you get the most out of your adventure. First up, Mystic, CT is an absolute gem for a car-free day. I always recommend taking the Amtrak directly to Mystic. From the station, the charming downtown, famous Mystic Seaport Museum, and the incredible Mystic Aquarium are all within walking distance or a short, affordable taxi ride. You absolutely must try the pizza at Mystic Pizza (yes, like the movie!) and grab some ice cream while strolling by the water. It’s perfect for a relaxed day of exploring maritime history and enjoying delicious eats. For those craving nature and a quaint upstate vibe, Cold Spring and Garrison, NY are fantastic options accessible via Metro-North. The train drops you right in Cold Spring, a postcard-perfect village with antique shops and cafes. My go-to here is a hike! There are trails for all levels, from a leisurely walk along the Hudson River to more challenging routes with breathtaking views. Afterward, treat yourself to some ice cream or a cozy lunch. Garrison, just a bit further, offers even more serene landscapes and places to explore. If you’re looking for a more sophisticated escape, Greenport, NY on Long Island is your spot, easily reached by the LIRR. This North Fork village is renowned for its wineries and breweries. I love spending an afternoon doing some wine tasting, enjoying a waterfront meal, and just soaking in the coastal atmosphere. It feels like a world away from the city, and the ferry to Shelter Island adds another layer of adventure if you have time. The picturesque streets are perfect for a leisurely stroll. And for art and craft beer lovers, Beacon, NY is a must-visit. Another easy Metro-North ride, Beacon boasts Dia Beacon, a world-class contemporary art museum, and a vibrant Main Street filled with independent boutiques, galleries, and fantastic eateries. I always make sure to fit in a brewery flight or two – there are some excellent craft breweries here. It’s a perfect blend of culture, nature (there are great park walks nearby), and good vibes, all without needing a car. Don't overlook Patchogue, NY either! This lively Long Island town, also accessible by LIRR, is great for a day of brunch, waterfront dining, and brewery tasting flights. It has a fantastic energy and plenty to keep you entertained. It's quickly becoming one of my favorite spots for a relaxed, car-free outing. When planning these car-free adventures, my top tip is to always check train schedules in advance, especially for weekend returns. Buying tickets ahead of time can also save you a bit of stress. Pack comfortable shoes, a portable charger, and an open mind! These trips prove you don't need a vehicle to explore New York's incredible surroundings. What are your favorite car-free escapes? I'm always looking for new ideas!
