Unit 6: Preparing for Job Interviews

This unit is about how to prepare for job interviews. A job interview is a very important step in the hiring process because it allows employers to evaluate whether you are suitable for the position, and it gives you the chance to show your skills, experiences, and personality.

First, before an interview, you must do your homework. Research the company—know its mission, values, products, services, and recent achievements. This shows you are serious about the job and helps you answer questions with confidence.

There are different types of interviews:

1. Phone interviews – usually 15–30 minutes, used for initial screening. The interviewer checks your basic qualifications and experience. You should find a quiet place, have your resume ready, and speak clearly.

2. Video interviews – done on Zoom, Skype, or Google Meet. They are often used when the candidate or employer is in another location. You must test your internet, camera, and microphone, and dress professionally.

3. In-person interviews – face-to-face at the company. These allow employers to observe your body language, confidence, and how you fit into the company culture. You must plan your route and arrive 10–15 minutes early.

Then we focus on common interview questions and how to answer them:

1. Tell me about yourself → Give a short professional summary, highlight relevant experiences, and avoid personal details.

2. Why do you want to work here? → Show your research about the company and explain how your goals match theirs.

3. What are your strengths and weaknesses? → Share a strength with an example, and mention a weakness but explain how you are improving it.

4. Describe a challenging situation and how you handled it → Use the STAR method: Situation, Task, Action, Result.

5. Where do you see yourself in five years? → Show your career goals and how you want to grow with the company.

We also practice role-plays. For example:

• In a phone interview, you emphasize your interest in the role.

• In a video interview, you keep eye contact and sit with good posture.

• In an in-person interview, you show enthusiasm, confidence, and knowledge about the company.

Finally, the unit reminds us about professional image and confidence. Be polite, dress appropriately, prepare copies of your resume, and bring questions for the interviewer. During the interview, highlight your achievements, stay positive, and show that you are the right fit for the position.
