Ritipanna is a traditional fishing method in Sri Lanka, where you sit on a stake in the shallow water of the sea and catch fish. It seems that it has been done for 150 years where there is a record. In the past, instead of fishing line, we used streaks from pineapple leaves, but since 1970 we have started using commercially available thread.
Fishing is done from May to December. One person seems to catch about 150 to 200 fish per day on average. There are two types of fishing, one with only one needle and the other with several needles connected.
A fishing rod with only one needle is used to catch small fish with a body length of 15 to 25 cm. A fishing rod with multiple needles is used to catch large fish with a body length of 30 to 45 cm. Both caught fish are said to be eaten as curry or fried. The taste and flavor are different from Japan, but it is a very delicious food with spices.

私がスリランカのコガラで体験したリティパンナ漁は、まさに時代を超えた漁業スタイルでした。浅い海に突き出た杭の上に腰掛けてじっと待つこの漁法は、ただ魚を釣るだけでなく、静けさの中で自然と一体になる時間を楽しめます。 実際には、釣り糸の素材の変遷も興味深く、かつてはパイナップルの葉の繊維を使っていたという話に驚きました。1970年代からは市販の釣り糸が使われているそうですが、その独特の釣りスタイルは変わっていません。 釣り方は2種類あり、針が一つの竿で小さな魚（15〜25cm）を狙い、針が複数つながった竿で大きな魚（30〜45cm）を狙います。私は両方を試しましたが、小さい魚も大きい魚もどちらも釣り上げる楽しさがありました。 捕まえた魚はすぐに地元の人々がカレーや揚げ物に調理してくれました。日本の魚料理とは異なり、スパイスが効いていてとても美味しかったです。特に海辺の新鮮な魚に香辛料が絡まる味は忘れがたい体験でした。 また、地元を散策すると、野生のウミガメ保護活動を行う「Koggala Sea Turtle Conservation Project」の立て札を見かけ、漁業と自然保護 が共存する地域ならではの優しさを感じました。 この釣り体験は単なるレジャーではなく、スリランカ文化や漁師の生活への理解を深める貴重な機会になります。初めての人でも体験ガイドが丁寧に教えてくれるので、安心して挑戦できます。旅の思い出作りにもおすすめのアクティビティです。ぜひ機会があれば直接体験して、伝統の漁法を感じてみてください。
