Say these auspicious words for Chinese New Year

2025/1/28 Edited to

... Read moreAs we usher in the Chinese New Year, there's always this wonderful buzz of excitement and hope for a fresh start. I've always loved hearing the traditional greetings, but this year, I really wanted to understand the deeper meaning behind these auspicious words and rituals. It's not just about saying them; it's about the intention and the belief that they truly usher in good fortune. One of the most fascinating things I learned, echoing what's said when waking up on the first day of the new year, is the ritual of opening your door and speaking specific blessings. Imagine, right as the new year officially begins, you stand at your doorway and declare phrases like "新的一年好运连连" (Good luck in the new year) and "顺风顺水万事如意" (Smooth sailing, all wishes come true). It's such a powerful way to set the tone for the entire year, inviting prosperity and ensuring everything goes smoothly. My family always emphasized wishing for "大吉大利" (great luck and great profit) for everyone, which truly embodies the spirit of shared prosperity. Beyond just words, I also came across a unique ritual that really resonated with me – the salt cleansing. After saying those auspicious words, you go to the kitchen and take a pinch of salt, holding it in your palm. As you slowly rub it, you silently acknowledge any past worries or "霉运在手" (bad luck in hand). Then, you turn on the faucet and let the water slowly wash the salt away, visualizing all the negativity being flushed down the drain. It's a symbolic act, a moment of letting go and trusting that you're making space for new, positive energy. I found it incredibly therapeutic and empowering, making me feel confident that the new year can definitely be done smoothly, with all the best outcomes. This tradition perfectly aligns with the idea that "旺人即是旺己" (To cross others is to cross oneself), meaning that when you wish prosperity and well-being for others, it naturally returns to you. It's a beautiful cycle of positive energy. From wishing "恭喜发财" (May you be prosperous) to sharing heartfelt greetings with loved ones, every word is imbued with centuries of cultural wisdom aimed at fostering harmony and good fortune. Understanding these sayings, whether in their original Chinese or appreciating their English translation, truly enriches the Chinese New Year experience, making it not just a celebration, but a profound practice of intention and community spirit.
