REMEMBERING HURRICANE KATRINA 20 YEAR'S LATER🌀 ♥️

Today in history, 2005: one of the most devastating hurricanes makes landfall along the coast in Louisiana.

Hurricane Katrina landed as a Category 3, gathering strength after making initial landfall in Florida as a Category 1. Though "only" a Category 3, Katrina's impact was increased given the failure of several levees and flood walls which led to citywide flooding.

Though the city was under evacuation orders, nearly 150,000 people were either unable or unwilling to leave leaving them without power and access to food and medical care.

Though the devastation in New Orleans was substantial and filled news coverage, several cities along the gulf coast were severely damaged as a result, including places like Biloxi, MS which is ninety miles away.

Hurricane Katrina didn’t just expose the strength of nature — it exposed the cracks in our system. Thousands of citizens, especially in New Orleans, were left stranded on rooftops, in flooded homes, and in overcrowded shelters. Families waited days for help that came too late. People were treated like they were disposable, when they deserved dignity, protection, and immediate care.

Katrina was more than a natural disaster — it was a humanitarian failure. It showed how inequality and neglect can turn a storm into a catastrophe. We must never forget the way citizens were abandoned, overlooked, and mistreated.

May we continue to honor those 1,339 lives lost, support survivors, and demand accountability so that history never repeats itself.

... Read moreHurricane Katrina remains one of the most catastrophic natural disasters in U.S. history, with its effects still resonating two decades later. On August 29th, 2005, the storm made a tragic mark not only by its physical devastation but by exposing deep social vulnerabilities. The failure of the levees surrounding New Orleans caused massive flooding, which submerged entire neighborhoods and displaced thousands. Cities like Biloxi, Mississippi, also suffered severe damage, showing that Katrina's reach extended far beyond Louisiana. The 20th anniversary brings a moment to reflect on lessons learned, especially regarding disaster preparedness and social equity. Despite evacuation orders, nearly 150,000 residents stayed behind due to various reasons including lack of transportation, resources, or mistrust in authorities. These individuals faced days of hardship without power, food, or medical care, highlighting gaps in emergency response systems. The images and pleas during the crisis — such as those captured in the “The Water RISINg Pleas” — symbolize the urgency and desperation of residents trapped by floodwaters. Unfortunately, some communities were overlooked or inadequately supported, exposing how marginalized groups often bear the brunt of such disasters. In the years since, considerable efforts have gone into rebuilding infrastructure and improving disaster response policies. However, the Katrina experience continues to serve as a critical reminder that human systems must address inequality to prevent future humanitarian failures. Supporting survivors and demanding accountability remain essential to ensuring that the tragedy of Katrina is never repeated. As communities commemorate this somber anniversary, it is vital to remember the 1,339 lives lost and to recognize the resilience of those who endured the storm. Ongoing support and advocacy for vulnerable populations during disaster scenarios are crucial. Engaging in conversations under hashtags like #20YearsLater, #HurricaneKatrina, and #NeverForget helps keep awareness alive and fosters a commitment to justice and preparedness.
