CAROUHELL EP3: lost mail is it the seller’s fault?
OHHHH NOOOOO :(((
This is the first time this actually happened (am a great believer of singpost haha because what else is there to use right?)
So I was selling this brand new baggu bag at less than cost price ($73 on official from US) and I rejected buyer’s offer of $60 which after she agreed to buy at $70. Subsequently she asked for free mailing and I asked if normal mail was ok. She asked other questions then agreed and paid $70 to me. Mailed out the item via normal mailing which I didn’t put a return address (I mean I thought only tracked mails need return address!!!!).
SO UNFORTUNATELY ITEM WAS MISSING!!! (Actually I mailed 2 other items tgt which were all delivered successfully).
Buyer asked to refund half the item but I rejected because ? you agreed to normal mailing which won’t be fair to me if I have to be liable too right? She insisted that she did not agree to normal mailing and have no idea how it works. She also said that I listed free tracked mailing on carousell (it was $1.99 tracked mail by carousell which she didn’t buy through). Contacted singpost and they said they can try to find it but really no promises 😭 then here comes the 1 star review
SIGH is this the seller’s fault? I mean she really might have missed out the message and really dk what normal mailing is BUTTTTTT you don’t have to be mean and review and imply that I got no common sense right…. I have buyers agreeing to normal mail for even pricier items or they will just top up for tracked mail or if they are really worried they will buy through carousell.
What do you all think? Seller or buyer’s fault?

... Read moreFrom personal experiences in online marketplaces, one key lesson is the importance of clear communication and confirmation regarding shipping methods. While untracked mail may save costs, it carries the inherent risk of loss or delays. Sellers should ideally clarify shipping terms explicitly and recommend tracked mail for valuable items to provide both parties with peace of mind.
In this case, the absence of a return address compounded the problem, as it limited the ability of postal services to return or locate the lost parcel. Typically, tracked mailing services require return addresses and offer a tracking number, making it easier to resolve shipping issues. Sellers and buyers should always discuss and mutually agree on delivery methods before finalizing payment to prevent misunderstandings.
Moreover, platforms like Carousell offer buyer protection options, including payment through official channels and tracked shipping, which can reduce disputes and enhance trust. When discrepancies arise, documenting all communications within the platform is crucial — it safeguards both seller and buyer in case of conflicts.
If a package goes missing, contacting the postal service promptly and filing a claim can sometimes recover the item or secure compensation. However, untracked shipments rarely have guarantees, so both buyers and sellers must accept certain risks.
Ultimately, shared responsibility is vital: sellers should provide transparent options and advice, while buyers need to understand the risks attached to each shipping choice. From my experience, offering tracked mail for an additional charge while providing cheaper untracked options, clearly explained, works best to accommodate different buyer preferences and minimizes potential disputes.
Being patient and empathetic during such conflicts also helps maintain good seller-buyer relations, even when problems occur. Negative reviews can be damaging but addressing concerns politely and offering reasonable solutions demonstrates professionalism and care, potentially preserving reputation and future sales.
i think this is seller's fault because you knew the risk of untracked mailing and when u asked her that qn, she was still occupied with other questions and did not pay attention to ur question + all mails require a return address due to risk of losses, and to prevent any disputes. it is also most likely rejected due to the big size of yr mail as the postage is too low, bags normally require tracked mailing unless you're mailing a letter (normal mailing is ok) mostly buyers are ok with topping up for tracked mailing, especially for pricey & big items! next time just be more careful and ask properly and let them know the risks of untracked mail 👍
