It’s truly a special feeling to watch your child grow and embrace their identity. Like many of you, I've had those moments where my son stands out – literally! When I say my son was often the only Samoan kid in his 1st grade class, it really highlights how unique his journey is. It's not just about physical presence; it's about carrying a rich heritage and a vibrant culture into every room he enters. Being a parent to a Samoan child, especially a strong, vibrant boy, comes with immense pride and a unique set of experiences. We often hear the term “big Samoan kids,” and while it can refer to their stature, it also speaks volumes about their spirit, their hearts, and the strength of their family bonds. Our children are often raised with a deep respect for aiga (family) and community, which shapes their character from a young age. I've learned so much about fostering that cultural pride in my son. It starts at home, with sharing stories of our ancestors, teaching him basic Samoan phrases, and celebrating our traditions, whether it's through food, music, or dance. Even if he's the only Samoan kid in his class, he knows he carries a legacy. We make sure he understands that his heritage is a superpower, a source of strength and identity, not something to ever feel self-conscious about. Navigating the school system can sometimes present interesting moments. Kids are naturally curious, and sometimes my son gets questions about his background or why he might be taller or stronger than his peers. These are teaching moments, not just for him, but for us as parents to help him articulate his identity with confidence. We encourage him to share about Samoa, about our family, and to be an ambassador for his culture. It’s about building bridges, not walls. For other parents raising Samoan children, or any child from a rich cultural background in a diverse setting, my biggest advice is to immerse them in their culture as much as possible, while also embracing the world around them. Find local community groups, attend cultural events, and connect with other families. It creates a vital support network and reinforces their sense of belonging. It’s also important to advocate for them in school, ensuring their cultural identity is acknowledged and celebrated. Ultimately, seeing my son thrive, proud of who he is and where he comes from, is the greatest reward. He might be the only Samoan kid in his 1st grade class, but he brings a whole world of culture, strength, and joy with him. And that, to me, is truly something special.
