หลายคนเวลาเริ่มอ่านนิยายภาษาอังกฤษจะติดตรง “เลือกเล่มจากปก” นี่แหละค่ะ เห็นปกสวยๆ แล้วกลัวอ่านไม่ไหว เราเลยใช้วิธีเลือกจาก “ปกนิยายภาษาอังกฤษที่เป็นซีรีส์อ่านง่าย” ก่อน ซึ่งชุดที่เซฟสุดสำหรับมือใหม่ในความเห็นเราคือ Diary of a Wimpy Kid เพราะเปิดปกมาปุ๊บ โทนหนังสือจะเป็นเหมือนไดอารี่ อ่านเป็นวันๆ และมีภาพการ์ตูนคั่นตลอด ทำให้ไม่เหนื่อยตาและไม่รู้สึกว่าเป็นนิยายเล่มหนา ถ้าถามว่า “จะเริ่มเล่มไหนดี” จริงๆ ชุดนี้อ่านเล่มไหนก่อนก็ได้ (ในสารบัญก็มีหลายเล่มมาก) แต่ถ้าอยากเลือกจาก “ปก” ให้ลองดูชื่อเล่มที่คนพูดถึงบ่อยๆ เช่น Old School, Dog Days, Cabin Fever, The Last Straw หรือ The Getaway — ปกแต่ละเล่มจะสื่อธีมชัดมาก เช่น หน้าหนาว/คริสต์มาส เที่ยวพักผ่อน หรือชีวิตโรงเรียน เลือกตามฟีลที่ชอบได้เลย แบบนี้จะทำให้มีแรงอ่านต่อมากขึ้น ทริคส่วนตัวเวลาเลือกปกนิยายภาษาอังกฤษให้มือใหม่อ่านสบายๆ: 1) เลือกเล่มที่มีภาพประกอบเยอะ: อย่าง Wimpy Kid จะมีรูปแทรกในทุกๆ หน้า ช่วยเดาความหมายจากบริบทได้ 2) เลือกภาษาที่เป็น “บทสั้นๆ”: เล่าเป็นตอนๆ ทำให้พักได้ ไม่ต้องอ่านยาวรวดเดียว 3) เปิดอ่าน 1-2 หน้าในร้านก่อนซื้อ: ถ้าอ่านแล้วจับใจความได้ประมาณ 60–70% ถือว่าเหมาะมาก 4) เช็กฟอนต์และระยะบรรทัด: หนังสือที่ตัวหนังสือไม่แน่นเกินไปจะอ่านได้นานกว่า อีกอย่างที่เราได้ประโยชน์จากชุดนี้คือ “คำศัพท์และแกรมมาร์พื้นฐาน” เจอซ้ำๆ ในสถานการณ์โรงเรียน เพื่อน ครอบครัว ทำให้จำได้ไวกว่าอ่านจากชีทคำศัพท์ล้วนๆ แนะนำให้มีโพสต์อิทแปะคำที่เจอบ่อย หรือจด 5 คำต่อบทพอ ไม่ต้องจดทุกคำ เดี๋ยวหมดสนุก ส่วนพิกัด ถ้าอยากได้ปกสวยๆ สภาพดี ลองเช็กร้านหนังสือภาษาอังกฤษ (ทั้งมือหนึ่งและมือสอง) หรือสั่งออนไลน์ก็ได้ บางช่วงมีโปรทำให้ราคาดีมาก เลือกเล่มจากปกที่ชอบแล้วค่อยไล่อ่านเล่มอื่นๆ ในซีรีส์ต่อ รับรองอ่านอังกฤษสนุกขึ้นเยอะค่ะ
