... Read moreBecoming a mother later in life often brings a set of unique experiences and emotions that differ from those of younger moms. As a geriatric mom, managing toddlers comes with both challenges and rewards that are worth sharing for anyone on this journey. One of the most striking aspects is the unexpected nature of parenting later in life. While I initially thought I'd have a completely different experience, being a mom with toddlers at this stage has surprised me positively. For example, life experience and patience tend to be greater, allowing for more calm and thoughtful parenting decisions. I find myself more appreciative of the small moments and milestones, which makes the daily routine feel more meaningful. On a practical note, physical stamina can sometimes be tested more rigorously. Toddlers are energetic and require constant attention, which demands a level of vitality that might not be as natural as it was in my 20s. I’ve learned to pace myself, integrate rest periods, and rely on help when needed. This balance is essential to maintaining both personal wellbeing and effective parenting. The emotional aspect of late motherhood also adds depth to the experience. Being older often brings a different perspective on parenting goals and priorities. There’s a greater focus on quality time, emotional bonding, and teaching empathy and resilience. These values feel especially important to pass on, knowing how precious and fleeting childhood is. Additionally, the social aspect can sometimes feel isolating, as many parenting groups and social circles tend to be younger. However, connecting with other geriatric moms or diverse mom communities online has been invaluable. Sharing stories helps combat the feeling of being the 'odd one out' and creates a supportive environment for discussions about health, energy, and lifestyle adaptations. Overall, being a geriatric mom has reshaped my approach to motherhood in unexpected and positive ways. It’s a journey filled with love, learning, and growth — both for me and my toddlers. This experience reinforces that no matter your age, embracing motherhood with openness and resilience leads to incredibly fulfilling and unforgettable moments.
