... Read moreHey everyone! So, I've noticed a lot of you are curious about hair types, and honestly, it's a journey! For the longest time, I just thought my hair was 'curly,' but understanding my specific type has been a game-changer for how I care for it. It's not just about what products to use, but really understanding its unique needs, from those delicate baby hairs to the main strands.
Identifying your hair type can feel a bit overwhelming at first, but it's simpler than you think. Most people refer to the Andre Walker Hair Typing System, which categorizes hair from Type 1 (straight) to Type 4 (coily), with subcategories (A, B, C) that indicate the tightness of the curl pattern.
Let's break it down quickly:
Type 1 (Straight): This hair type has no natural curl pattern. It tends to be oily because sebum can easily travel down the shaft. Think sleek and shiny!
Type 2 (Wavy): Wavy hair forms an 'S' shape.
*2A:* Fine, easily straightened, loose waves.
*2B:* Medium texture, more defined 'S' shape, can be a bit frizzier.
*2C:* Thicker waves, more prone to frizz, with some defined curls mixed in.
Type 3 (Curly): This type has a definite curl pattern, ranging from loose loops to tight spirals.
*3A:* Large, loose curls, often shiny.
*3B:* Bouncy ringlets, can have a mix of textures.
*3C:* Tight, corkscrew curls, generally voluminous, and prone to dryness.
Type 4 (Coily): Coily hair is tightly packed, forming zig-zags or 'Z' patterns. It's often the most fragile and prone to shrinkage.
*4A:* Densely packed S-pattern coils, often still visible when stretched.
*4B:* Tighter Z-pattern, less defined curl pattern, can have cotton-like texture.
*4C:* Small, tightly packed zig-zag pattern, minimal definition without product, experiences significant shrinkage.
Now, how to figure out *yours*? The best way is to wash your hair thoroughly, apply a light leave-in conditioner, and let it air dry without touching it too much. Observe the pattern it forms. Sometimes, your hair might have different types in different sections! For example, my baby hairs and edges might be a looser curl than the rest of my hair, which is common. Paying attention to these smaller details, like those intricately styled baby hairs you see on me, can give you clues about your overall hair tendencies.
Understanding your hair type helps you choose the right products and techniques. For example, if you have fine 2A waves, heavy creams might weigh them down. If you have 4C coils, deep conditioning and moisture are your best friends. Don't forget to also consider porosity (how well your hair absorbs moisture) and density (how much hair you have). These factors are just as crucial as your curl pattern in building an effective hair care routine. It's all about loving and understanding the hair you've got!
