I, Medusa 🐍 Book Review

Maiden. Mistress. Myth. Monster.

Medusa is the MOMENT.

This was everything and more. A retelling so moving, relatable, and heartbreakingly beautiful. I couldn’t find myself able to put it down. I loved Ayana‘s storytelling so much. The way she set this up beginning to end had me entranced and transported along the shorelines of Medusas journey. I’m speechless with the range of topics fit into this that left me feeling empowered as a woman. I hope women who read this feel that same acceptance, comfort, and belonging. A sisterhood that will stand against time. Forever a favorite. Infinity stars.

... Read moreAfter sharing my initial thoughts on Ayana Gray's 'I, Medusa,' I just had to dive a little deeper because this novel left such an impact on me. My first review was filled with pure emotion, but now I want to explain why this book resonated so strongly and what makes it a standout in the world of YA Greek mythology retellings. What truly sets 'I, Medusa' apart is how Ayana Gray takes a figure so often demonized and gives her a voice, a history, and a future. We all know the myth of Medusa, but this novel peels back the layers to reveal the 'Maiden' she once was, the 'Mistress' of her own fate, the 'Myth' she became, and yes, the 'Monster' she was perceived to be. It's not just a retelling; it's a reclaiming. Gray masterfully explores the complexities of identity, challenging us to look beyond the surface and question preconceived notions. I found myself empathizing with Medusa in ways I never anticipated, seeing her struggles and triumphs through a completely fresh lens. Beyond the compelling narrative, the themes woven throughout 'I, Medusa' are incredibly powerful. The sense of empowerment I felt while reading was immense – it's about finding strength in vulnerability and standing up for oneself even when the world tries to break you. The sisterhood depicted is truly heartwarming; it’s a bond that transcends time and offers a sanctuary of acceptance and comfort. In a world that often judges women harshly, this book champions unity and understanding. It tackles serious topics like betrayal, trauma, and societal pressures with grace and sensitivity, making Medusa's journey feel incredibly real and relevant to today's readers. Ayana Gray's writing style is simply enchanting. She has this incredible ability to transport you directly to ancient Greece, painting vivid pictures of the settings and immersing you in the characters' emotions. Every sentence feels purposeful, every description rich. It’s the kind of prose that makes you want to savor each chapter, yet the plot is so gripping you can't help but turn the pages. Her character development, especially for Medusa, is phenomenal – you witness her growth and transformation organically, feeling every step of her arduous path. If you loved her other works, you’ll find her signature beautiful storytelling here. So, who is this book for? If you're a fan of young adult Greek mythology, feminist retellings, or stories with strong, nuanced female protagonists, then 'I, Medusa' should definitely be on your radar. It’s perfect for readers who enjoy a rich, character-driven story that delves into emotional depth rather than just fast-paced action. While some might wonder if 'I, Medusa' is 'spicy,' I'd say its true heat comes from the intensity of its emotional journey and the powerful relationships, not necessarily explicit romance. It offers a fresh, thought-provoking perspective that will appeal to anyone looking for a myth re-imagined with heart and depth. And can we talk about the aesthetics? Holding the physical copy of 'MEDUSA A NOVEL' with its dark green cover adorned with golden speckles, or even seeing the striking silhouette on my Kindle e-reader, just adds to the overall experience. The cover art itself, often featuring that mysterious silhouette, perfectly captures the somber beauty and enigmatic nature of Medusa's tale. It’s clear a lot of thought went into making the book visually appealing, reflecting the rich narrative within. Seriously, if you haven't picked up 'I, Medusa' yet, I urge you to do so. It’s more than just a book; it’s an experience that will challenge your perceptions, empower your spirit, and perhaps even make you fall in love with a character you thought you already knew. It's a new favorite for me, and I hope it becomes one for you too!

I, Medusa is a powerful retelling that finally gives depth and humanity to one of mythology’s most misunderstood figures. Instead of a monster, we see Medusa as a 17-year-old girl caught in the feud between Athena and Poseidon and forced to bear the consequences of a god’s violence. One line tha
