Say hello to Everette 🌱

Ever since Everette, my beautiful variegated pothos, joined our home, she's brought so much joy and a vibrant touch of green (and white!). You saw her thriving beautifully in her white macrame planter by the window, those green and white leaves absolutely pop! If you're wondering how to keep your own pothos looking just as healthy and happy, or thinking about getting one, I'm excited to share some of my go-to tips that have worked wonders for Everette. Firstly, let's talk about light. Variegated pothos like Everette absolutely adore bright, indirect light. This is crucial not just for their overall health, but especially for maintaining those stunning white and green patterns on their leaves. Too little light, and the white parts might fade, making the plant look greener. Too much direct sun, and those beautiful leaves can get scorched! I found a perfect spot for Everette near a window where she gets plenty of brightness but is shielded from harsh direct rays, especially during the midday. Watering is another key aspect. Pothos are pretty forgiving, but they do have preferences. I generally water Everette when the top two inches of soil feel dry to the touch. A good way to check is to stick your finger into the soil. If it feels damp, wait a bit longer. If it's dry, it's time for a drink! I make sure to water thoroughly until it drains out of the bottom, then I empty any excess water from the saucer. Overwatering is a common mistake that can lead to root rot, so it's always better to err on the side of underwatering slightly. You’ll notice the leaves might start to droop a little when they're thirsty, which is their way of telling you it's time for a drink! One of the most rewarding things about pothos is how easy they are to propagate. If Everette gets a bit long or I just want more plants (who doesn't?!), I simply take stem cuttings. Each cutting needs at least one leaf and one node (that little bump on the stem where a leaf or root can grow). I snip below a node and then place the cuttings in a glass of water. It’s amazing to watch the roots sprout! Once they have a few inches of roots, they're ready to be planted in soil. This is a fantastic way to expand your plant collection or share the joy with friends. For soil, a well-draining potting mix is ideal. Pothos aren't too fussy, but good drainage is essential to prevent soggy roots. As for feeding, I use a balanced liquid fertilizer about once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) to give Everette an extra boost. In the fall and winter, I cut back on fertilizing as the plant's growth slows down. If you ever notice yellowing leaves, it could be a sign of overwatering or even underwatering, so always check the soil moisture first. Brown, crispy edges might indicate low humidity or underwatering. Observing your plant is the best way to understand its needs. Finally, let's appreciate the aesthetic!
