She’s always been so active and healthy, so a surprise pregnancy was truly not planned, and the last thing on my mind! But then, I started noticing little things that made me wonder if she was indeed having babies. It made me realize how important it is to know the signs of dog pregnancy, especially since it can be so unexpected. One of the first things I noticed, which many people look for, was a change in her nipples. They weren't just a little different; they seemed to be slightly more prominent and a bit darker than usual. This change usually happens a few weeks into pregnancy and can be a strong indicator. Beyond that, her appetite started to fluctuate – sometimes she was ravenous, other times a bit picky. I also observed her becoming a bit more affectionate, seeking out cuddles more often, and sometimes even showing signs of nesting behavior, like trying to arrange her blankets in a specific way. These behavioral shifts, combined with the physical changes, really made me start putting the pieces together. Of course, the only way to truly confirm it was a visit to the vet. They were able to perform an ultrasound, which was such an emotional moment – seeing those tiny little heartbeats! If you're wondering how to tell if your dog is pregnant, paying close attention to these early signs and then getting professional confirmation is key. It's not always obvious, and sometimes, like in my case, it can be a complete surprise even after so many years together. Once we knew for sure, our focus shifted to preparing for the big day. We made sure she was getting a high-quality diet, suitable for pregnant dogs, to support the growing puppies. Our vet also guided us on what to expect during her pregnancy journey and how to prepare for the delivery. Setting up a whelping box in a quiet, warm area became a priority. It's a cozy space where she can feel safe and comfortable when she finally starts having her babies. Learning about the stages of labor and what to look out for was also crucial, as it helps you stay calm and supportive during what can be an intense time for your dog. The journey of my dog having puppies has been an incredible learning experience. From those first subtle signs to now eagerly awaiting the arrival of her litter, every step has been filled with both excitement and a little bit of anxiety. Seeing her continue to be active and healthy throughout this process has been the most important thing. It just goes to show that even when life throws you an unexpected curveball, the love and care you put into your pets make all the difference. I'm so looking forward to welcoming these new members to our family!
