Neat Balls Vegan Meat Balls in a Can Review

2025/5/1 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, so let's talk about Neat Balls! Like many of you, I'm always on the hunt for convenient, plant-based protein options, especially on busy weeknights. When I first stumbled upon these vegan 'meat' balls in a can, I was intrigued. A 425g can seemed like a decent portion, and the idea of shelf-stable vegan meatballs was definitely appealing. But, as the original post hinted, they definitely need a bit of love and a good strategy to go from 'okay' to 'oh wow, these are actually really good!' My first attempt was, well, a learning experience. I just drained them and heated them up, and while edible, they were a bit bland and soft. That's when I realized the 'little help' part. Here's what I've found works wonders: First, drain and rinse them thoroughly. This helps remove any excess brine and can improve the texture. Then, the magic really happens with how you cook them. My absolute favorite method is to pan-fry them until they're nicely browned and slightly crispy on the outside. A little olive oil or vegan butter in a hot pan does the trick. This develops a fantastic texture that makes them feel much more like traditional meatballs. Another great option is to bake them in the oven for about 15-20 minutes at 375°F (190°C) after tossing them in a bit of oil and your favorite spices. Now, for seasoning – this is crucial! Don't just rely on them tasting amazing straight out of the can. Think about what you'd season regular meatballs with. Garlic powder, onion powder, a pinch of smoked paprika, dried oregano, and a good crack of black pepper are my go-to's. If you're feeling adventurous, a dash of liquid smoke or even some nutritional yeast can add an extra layer of savory flavor. Once you've got them perfectly cooked and seasoned, the possibilities are endless. I love tossing them into a rich marinara sauce for a classic spaghetti and 'meat' balls dinner. They also make fantastic additions to subs with melted vegan cheese and plenty of sauce. For a quick lunch, I've even chopped them up and added them to wraps or salads for an extra protein boost. They soak up flavors beautifully, so don't be shy with your sauces and spices! Considering that 425g can, I usually get two generous servings out of it, especially when paired with pasta or rice. It's a really cost-effective way to get a decent amount of plant-based protein without much fuss, once you know the tricks. So, if you've seen Neat Balls (or similar canned vegan proteins) and wondered if they're worth a try, I'd say absolutely! Just remember that a little strategic planning in the kitchen will turn these humble canned proteins into a rewarding and delicious meal component. They've become a staple in my pantry for those days when I need something quick, easy, and satisfying.
