The heat and tumbling create friction that causes the hair strands to intertwine and mat tightly, making it nearly impossible to detangle without cutting the wig. Instead, it's best to let your wig air dry naturally. After washing, gently squeeze out excess water and place your wig on a stand or lay it flat in a shaded area. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent fading or fiber damage. I found that using a leave-in conditioner spray designed for synthetic or human hair wigs helps keep the strands soft and manageable. Matting often happens gradually, so regular maintenance is key. Brushing your wig gently with a wide-tooth comb before and after each wear can prevent tangles from turning into matted clumps. Also, avoid excessive heat styling unless your wig is heat-resistant. If your wig does become matted, some people try soaking it in a solution with conditioner or wig detangler and carefully working through the knots, but this can be very time-consuming and isn't always effective. In severe cases, replacement might be the only option. Seeing deep wave wigs matted inside a dryer taught me this hard lesson. If you're struggling with a matted wig, remember this is your sign never to use a dryer on wigs. Proper care not only extends your wig’s life but also saves you from emotional and financial stress related to wig fail moments.
