I used Nancy’s as my starter culture and I have been using the same culture for about 2 years with no problems.
This is different for everyone though. To insure a culture you can continuously use I would recommend purchasing an heirloom culture online. These can be used over and over with no problems. #kitchenlizard #homemadeyogurt #instantpot #cooking #fromscratch
Maintaining a healthy yogurt starter culture is essential for anyone passionate about making homemade yogurt. From personal experience, using a reliable culture like Nancy’s can make all the difference. I've found that keeping my starter culture alive for years is possible if you pay attention to the conditions it’s kept in. Firstly, always reserve a portion of your yogurt each time you make a batch to use as the starter for the next. This practice helps your culture thrive and reduces the need for buying a new culture frequently. It’s also important to handle the culture with clean utensils to avoid contamination. Temperature control is another critical factor. Yogurt cultures thrive between 110°F to 115°F. Using an Instant Pot with a yogurt setting can simplify the temperature management process, ensuring that your starter culture reproduces effectively. Heirloom starter cultures, which are often available from specialized online sources, have the advantage of being more robust and enduring than commercial starters. They contain traditional strains that can be reused many times without losing their potency. Purchasing such heirloom cultures can be a great investment if you love making yogurt from scratch regularly. In addition, don't be discouraged if your culture shows slight variations in taste or texture over time; this is normal as cultures adapt and evolve. You can also try blending your heirloom culture with fresh milk and fermenting under optimal conditions to revive its strength. Sharing your experience with others, through forums or social media tags like #homemadeyogurt or #kitchenlizard, can help you find new tips and support from the homemade yogurt community. Whether you are crafting yogurt in your Instant Pot or by traditional methods, the journey of nurturing your yogurt culture is rewarding and delicious. Embrace the process and enjoy fresh homemade yogurt anytime you like!
