A Price to Pay

there is always a price

i don’t just leave.

i calculate it.

i measure the mood

before i even say it out loud.

“i’m going to step out for a bit.”

and instantly

i can feel the bill being written.

the sigh.

the tight jaw.

the shift in tone

that tells me

this will not be free.

walking on eggshells

for the crime

of having a plan

that does not revolve

around everyone else.

it becomes a discussion.

then a negotiation.

and then

silence.

thick.

intentional.

as if communication

has been revoked.

the same quiet

i learned to decode

as a little girl.

the kind that says

you have disappointed me

without ever saying it at all.

so i prepare for the price

bathed children.

clean faces.

counters wiped.

laundry folded.

instructions repeated twice.

i leave the house in order

like proof

that i am responsible.

the price

is that it will all become undone.

when i return

it is waiting.

toys across the floor.

food smeared

on the once-mopped tile.

clean clothes

mixed back

with the dirty.

counters sticky.

order undone.

not chaos

a receipt.

now you pay

in tension.

in cleanup.

in guilt

that lasts longer

than the hour you were gone.

sometimes

i choose isolation

not because i don’t need air

but because i know

there is always

a price to pay.

... Read moreIn my own experience as a mother, I've found that taking a moment for myself often feels like navigating an emotional minefield. The anxiety begins even before I say I'm going to step out—the anticipation of the sighs, the subtle shifts in tone, and the silent judgments can be overwhelming. It’s that familiar sensation of walking on eggshells, where even expressing a need for personal time feels like a selfish act. I’ve learned to prepare meticulously before leaving, tidying up, giving clear instructions, and creating an illusion of order to minimize the fallout. But I’ve come to realize that this preparation is never enough to prevent the inevitable disarray upon my return. The chaos waiting for me isn’t just physical; it’s emotional—a tangible receipt of my absence. What resonates deeply with me is the cycle of tension and guilt that extends far beyond the hour I'm gone. It’s a silent communication, reminiscent of childhood lessons where disappointment wasn’t spoken but deeply felt. Choosing isolation sometimes becomes less about escape and more about self-preservation, acknowledging that there truly is always a price to pay. Sharing these feelings openly has helped me connect with other mothers who face similar struggles. It’s a reminder that our desires for space and self-care are valid. While the cost is real, so is the necessity of protecting our emotional well-being to be present and resilient for our families. Embracing this truth can be the first step toward healing generational patterns and finding peace in the chaos of motherhood.
