Colic In Horses

Rio had gas colic. This was a very long night. We walked him throughout the night and the next morning. Our vet arrived, and she put a tube down his nose and gave him mineral oil and water. Since Rio had gas colic, he was strictly on hay and grass. Rio is doing amazing 👏

Gas colic, specifically, occurs when gas builds up in the intestines, causing discomfort. It's crucial for horse owners to recognize the signs early, such as restlessness, kicking at the belly, and changes in eating behavior. In managing a horse with colic, it is advised to keep them calm and avoid feeding them grain or rich food until evaluated by a veterinarian. Veterinarians may use treatments like mineral oil, as experienced with Rio, to alleviate the issue by lubricating the intestines and promoting movement. Additionally, ensuring proper hydration and providing gradual access to hay and grass can aid recovery. Regular monitoring and understanding your horse's normal behavior are key in preventing future episodes of colic. If you suspect colic, always consult a veterinarian promptly, as timely intervention can make a significant difference in outcomes.
