As I read the heartbreaking news involving students today, my heart breaks for the victims, their families, the teachers, and everyone affected.

Moments like these remind us that our children need more than food, education, and material things.

They need our presence.

They need our guidance.

They need our prayers.

As parents, we cannot assume that everything is okay just because our children come home from school every day.

Ask them how their day went.

Ask them what they’re struggling with.

Ask them who their friends are.

Ask them what they’re watching, reading, and spending time on online.

Know what’s in their hearts before the world shapes it for them.

Many young people today are carrying burdens they don’t know how to express. Some are dealing with loneliness, rejection, anger, bullying, anxiety, and confusion. Sometimes the signs are there, but we are too busy to notice.

This is why our role as parents is so important.

We are not only called to provide for our children.

We are called to shepherd them.

To teach them.

To correct them.

To discipline them in love.

Most importantly, we are called to bring them to Christ.

Teach them God’s Word while they are young.

Pray with them.

Read Scripture with them.

Help them understand that their identity, worth, and hope are found in Christ alone.

Because while schools can educate our children, only God can transform their hearts.

Parents, let’s not wait for a crisis before we become intentional.

Our children need us now.

May we raise a generation that knows God, loves God, and follows God.

And may the Lord comfort every family affected by this tragedy.

“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”

— Proverbs 22:6

... Read moreIn addition to the important reminders from the original article, I want to share some personal reflections on being an intentional and present parent in today’s world. I have found that children need more than just basic needs met; they crave genuine connections that go beyond daily routines. From my experience, creating open channels of communication at home is essential. It’s not enough to simply ask, “How was your day?”—we need to truly listen and engage with our children’s answers, encouraging them to express their feelings and thoughts without judgment. This helps us identify any struggles like loneliness or anxiety early on and supports their emotional well-being. Integrating faith into everyday life also brings profound comfort and strength. Praying together as a family, reading Scripture, and discussing its relevance can anchor children in a sense of purpose and identity rooted in Christ. When children understand they are valued and loved by God, it empowers them to face challenges with hope and resilience. I also recommend being vigilant about what influences our children’s hearts—whether through media, social networks, or peer interactions. Knowing what they watch or read online allows parents to guide their consumption and discuss content thoughtfully, shaping their worldview positively. Lastly, the proverb mentioned in the article, “Train up a child in the way he should go,” resonates deeply. This training requires patience, love, and consistency—it’s a lifelong commitment that impacts not just their childhood but their entire future. In times of crisis and beyond, our presence, guidance, and faith-based parenting create a safe and nurturing environment where children can grow into compassionate, grounded individuals. Let us cherish these roles and not wait to become intentional, because our children’s hearts depend on it.
