For Novels
This was an editing style I learned from editor and teacher Margie Lawson. Have you ever done this? Highlighting the various parts of your novel so that you can see in one glance the balance of action to dialogue to internalization to descriptions.
I found it super helpful to gauge what I’m over-writing and under-writing, especially when it came to internal monologues and setting descriptions. I don’t do this anymore, but only because I know what to look out for after years of editing like this. Either way, I’m super grateful to learning this technique - I feel like it really helped elevate my writing. ✍️💛📕

Editing your novel is crucial for achieving a well-rounded story. A technique that many authors find beneficial involves highlighting different elements of your writing. This method allows you to assess the balance between action, dialogue, and descriptive passages. For instance, if you notice heavy internal monologues overshadowing action, it might indicate areas to cut back or expand upon. Furthermore, understanding the flow and pacing of your narrative is just as important. Effective use of dialogue can enhance the readers' engagement while descriptive writing can create vivid imagery. Various writing tools and software are available today that assist in this process by offering visual insights into the structure of your text. As you grow as a writer, refining your editing skills will enable you to identify patterns in your work that either enhance or detract from your storytelling. Many authors recommend a round of edits specifically focused on one aspect of the writing, such as character dialogue or scene settings. This approach helps isolate issues and gives writers the chance to improve without feeling overwhelmed by the entire manuscript. Consider joining writing groups or forums where you can share your work and receive constructive feedback. Engaging with fellow writers not only builds community support but also offers fresh perspectives on improving your writing techniques. Remember, the goal of editing is not to erase your unique voice but to ensure that it resonates clearly with your audience.

Wow! No I haven’t. I’m going to try it once I get some ink for my printer lol
