As a Boston MUA, one of the most rewarding parts of my job is seeing everyone in a bridal party feel absolutely radiant, no matter their age. While the focus is often on the bride, ensuring the mother of the bride or groom, and other mature guests, look and feel their best is equally important. This often brings up the topic of 'old age makeup,' or rather, techniques for mature skin, which require a gentle, expert touch. From my experience, like during a recent Foxborough wedding where I was setting up bright and early (around 6:45 am!), I always prioritize a personalized approach. When working with clients like the beautiful 'Mom' in my recent wedding vlog, the goal isn't to make them look younger, but to enhance their natural beauty and create a timeless, elegant look that lasts through the entire day, from the getting ready photoshoot to the first dance. It's about celebrating their wisdom and grace. Here are some of my go-to tips for achieving that perfect, ageless glow: 1. Skin Preparation is Key: Mature skin often needs extra hydration. I always start with a rich moisturizer and a hydrating primer. This creates a smooth canvas, minimizing the appearance of fine lines and ensuring makeup doesn't settle into wrinkles. Think of it as plumping the skin from within. 2. Choose the Right Foundation: Less is often more. I opt for lightweight, luminous foundations or tinted moisturizers instead of heavy, matte formulas. These can look cakey and emphasize texture. Applying with a damp beauty sponge or a stippling brush provides a natural, even finish. 3. Gentle Eye Makeup & Defined Brows: For eyes, I stick to soft, neutral tones that brighten and open the eye. Cream shadows can work wonders, avoiding any creasing. A soft eyeliner, often smudged at the lash line, provides definition without harshness. And brows? They frame the face! Filling in sparse areas with a brow powder or pencil that matches the natural hair color can instantly lift and define, making a huge difference. 4. Blush and Lips for a Pop of Color: Cream blushes are fantastic for mature skin as they blend seamlessly and give a youthful flush. I apply them to the apples of the cheeks and blend upwards towards the temples. For lips, hydration is paramount. I use lip liners to prevent bleeding and then apply hydrating lipsticks or tinted balms in flattering shades. Avoiding overly dark or matte lipsticks can keep the look fresh. 5. Hair Styling Considerations: Just as important as 'Makeup & Hair' is the overall look. For mature clients, I've found that softer, voluminous hairstyles, perhaps with some wispy pieces around the face, tend to be more flattering than overly severe or slicked-back styles. It's about enhancing natural texture and providing a gentle lift. During consultations, I always encourage clients like the 'Groom's sister' or 'Mom' to share their makeup preferences and any concerns they might have. We discuss their comfort levels and what makes them feel beautiful. The aim is always to create a look that feels authentic to them, allowing them to shine confidently in every photograph and throughout the wedding celebrations.
