Oh You’re From West Virginia?
The amount of times I am met with disgust, or better yet, informed my home isn’t even a state is too great to count! I am a born & raised West Virginian with my ancestors dating back to before we were even our state separate from Virginia (no I do not reside in western Virginia). It’s taken years of being ashamed of my roots, but now as an adult I am proud of my country mountain home. There truly is magic in these hills that I have traveled far and wide to replace, and yet never can manage.
The quiet above is from the introduction of Green Hills of Magic: West Virginia Folktales from Europe by Ruth Ann Musick. It’s one of my favorite collection of US based folk tales & I highly recommend it to ANYONE who loves folklore regardless of where you call home.

West Virginia is often underestimated by outsiders, but the state holds a deep cultural richness and a mystical charm that continue to captivate those who truly know it. The state's landscape is characterized by rolling green hills and rugged mountains that have inspired countless folktales and legends, many of which are preserved in collections like Ruth Ann Musick's Green Hills of Magic: West Virginia Folktales from Europe. These stories reveal an Appalachian tradition steeped in magic, supernatural encounters, and historical depth, drawing from the diverse immigrant backgrounds of the region. The magic described in the hills goes beyond their physical beauty; it is tied to the identity and heritage of West Virginians themselves. Many residents, like the author, have ancestors dating back before West Virginia became its own state, which separated from Virginia during the Civil War era in 1863. This historical context shapes a strong sense of belonging and pride among natives who often face misconceptions and stereotypes about their home. Understanding West Virginia’s folklore provides valuable insights into the Appalachian way of life and its values, such as resilience, community, and connection to nature. Folktales from this region often highlight the interplay between humans and the natural world, featuring mythical creatures and enchanted places that symbolize both challenges and hopes. For anyone interested in American folklore or regional history, embracing West Virginian culture means appreciating these narratives' cultural significance and the real-life experiences of those living in these hills. Whether you are a folklorist, a traveler seeking authentic heritage, or someone curious about Appalachian living, the magic of West Virginia's green hills remains a powerful symbol of identity and tradition worth exploring further.
